Job Posting: Yosemite National Park (Internship)

The Yosemite National Park Pathways Engineering Internship for 2018 is going to be announced on www.usajobs.gov.  The application process is very competitive, and it typically closes once we have 75 applicants, which can happen on the first day!
The duties of position are typically suitable and applicable to Civil Engineering students.   The internships are typically filled by Junior-level students.  Seniors and Graduate Students who will be continuing their education in 2018/2019 (after the internship) are also eligible.  Sophomores may also qualify, depending on the number of credits they have completed, and if they have previous related work experience that they document correctly on their resume (see note 7).
If students are interested in a summer or co-op type engineering position at Yosemite, they should do the following:
1) Create an account/profile at www.usajobs.gov.
2) Become familiar with the usajobs.gov website, and how it works.
3) Complete a resume in usajobs, and upload your most current transcripts (unofficial is fine), so that they are ready to go as soon as the announcement is posted.
4) Create an e-mail alert to notify you when jobs match both of the following keywords: 0899 and YOSEMITE.  (0899 is the job series for Student Intern Engineers.)
5) Maybe search a couple of times a day, so that you get to the announcement as soon as it opens.
6) Follow the directions in the announcement, to the letter!
7) You must include months, years, and hours per week worked, on your resume, to receive credit for your work (and/or volunteer) experience. Part‐time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate  exact hours per week or is listed as “varies”.
8) For the questions where you have to rate your experience in different areas, be honest, but not humble.  Rate yourself against other students, not the world at large.

Job Description

Louis Berger is currently seeking Roadway and Bridge Inspectors to join its North Carolina CEI team and work on exciting transportation projects. Roadway and Bridge Inspectors will have the opportunity to work onsite alongside engineers and project managers while taking on the following responsibilities:

  • Examine and interpret construction plans, schedules and quantities.
  • Support engineers in functional areas such as construction inspection, surveying and material sampling and testing.
  • Verify that work is performed safely and in accordance with the project plans and specifications.
  • Perform a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing and processing field data.

Required Experience

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology and two years of progressive transportation experience; OR graduation from high school and four years of progressive transportation experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
  • NCDOT Concrete Field Technician certification, NCDOT Conventional Density certification, Level II Erosion & Sediment Control/Stormwater certification, NCDOT QMS Roadway Technician certification, NCDOT ABC and Borrow Pit Sampling certification.
  • Engineering Interns (EI) may be eligible for this position with less than the required years of experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Occasional lifting of equipment up to 60 lbs.
  • Performing physical activities required of the testing and inspection procedures including squatting, bending, lifting, climbing and traversing difficult terrain.
  • Ability to keep accurate records and compute field data.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • The ability to complete work assignments independently.
  • Willingness to perform work after regular business hours, on weekends and holidays when necessary.

The CEE Student Success Center (SSC) will be opening tonight for business.  It is located in 102 Dillman Hall.

Hours of operation: 
Monday-Thursday: 4-9 pm
Please feel free to use the center during the day as a quiet study area.  In the evenings, drop for help with your CEE courses.   We also have coaches available to help with a few courses outside our Department as well: MEEM2110 (Statics), MEEM2150 (Mechanics of Materials), and ENG3200 (Thermo/Fluids).  If you have any questions regarding the SSC, please contact one of the head coaches, Ryan Kibler (rjkibler@mtu.edu) or Heidi Anderson (hkanders@mtu.edu)

Tomorrow (Tuesday, January 23) there will be an outreach event for the Consumer Product Manufacturing (CPM) Enterprise. At this event, CPM students will give a short presentation on what an Enterprise is and what projects we have to offer. We currently have 12 diverse projects, so there is something for every student of every major. Pizza and pop will be provided. Details are as follows:
CEE students!!  The CPM Enterprise is needing students to work on the ATC Transmission Line Town Foundation Project.  Please attend the info meeting if you are interested!

Welcome Back! It is a new year and new semester, and REAC will be doing things a little differently this time. Our first meeting of the semester will take place at 7pm on Tuesday, January 23rd in a new location: Rekhi 214. Please see the attached flyer.
