Congratulations to Dr. Timothy Eisele, associate professor of chemical engineering at Michigan Technological University, on receiving $1,035,309 in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for his project, “Production of Improved DRI Feed from Diverse Iron Ore Sources by Reductive Bioleaching.”
The project will develop technology to transform low-cost, low-grade iron ore waste into valuable iron using bioleaching—a process that uses microorganisms to extract and concentrate iron from dilute sources.
The research team will engineer microorganisms in controlled constructed wetlands to enhance their natural ability to leach iron from low-grade ore. The goal is to create a more sustainable pathway for recovering iron and producing usable feedstock for ironmaking.
