Reminder: Public Events for Provost Candidate Jacqueline Huntoon

As a candidate for Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Jacqueline Huntoon will be conducting the following events open to the University community; all are welcome to participate in any event, regardless of their intended focus audience:

Open forum (faculty and staff): Today from 2 to 3 p.m., MUB Ballroom A

Open forum (students): Tomorrow from 1 to 2 p.m., Dow 641

Discussion with women at Michigan Tech: Tomorrow, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., East Reading Room of the Library

Please take part in as many of the activities with each candidate as possible, and provide your input to the search committee through the website.

You’re invited – open forums for Provost candidates

The candidates for provost will each be presenting two open forums, one intended primarily for faculty and staff and one intended for students, although anyone can attend either.  A website http://www.mtu.edu/provostsearch/ is kept updated and provides links to surveys for your comments.  We encourage you to become familiar with the candidates and let us know your thoughts.

Formatting help available for dissertations, theses, and reports

Are you working on formatting corrections for your dissertation, thesis, or report?  Do you need help?

Join Harriet King, coordinator of the Graduate School Communications Assistance Program for group work hours in the Library. These workshops are provided at no charge to students working on a dissertation, thesis, or report. Harriet is skilled with MS Office, Open Office, and Adobe Acrobat Pro, and can provide group tutoring and assistance during these open times – all sessions will be held in Library 242:

Copyright and Patent Workshops for Grad Students

The series has been updated to include additional, practical information and experience about patents with campus experts and the library’s Patent and Trademark Resource Center. Students gain an understanding also of copyright and authorship as it pertains to their theses and dissertations and other publication matters.

When: Thursdays, 5:30-7:00 Feb 19-April 5 (total of 3 sessions)
What:

  • No credit and no cost
  • Emphasizes academic publishing and patent searching
  • Blended group learning experience using Canvas
  • Dinner Served!
  • Certificate of completion
  • Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • This will be the final semester in this format.

Register Now for EndNote Workshops

EndNote is a citation management software that helps you easily create and manage bibliographic information and incorporate references into your writing.The Van Pelt and Opie Library is offering introductory EndNote workshops.  EndNote software is free to all current Michigan Tech students, faculty and staff.

Seating for these workshops is limited and registration is required. Visit the library’s Workshops calendar to register.

Tuesday, Feb. 3:

1:00–2:15 p.m. EndNote Basic

  • No prior knowledge of EndNote is necessary
  • create and manage references using EndNote
  • construct an EndNote Library in order to effectively organize references
  • create custom and smart groups to efficiently manage references

2:15–3:00 p.m. EndNote Cite As You Write

  • Attending EndNote Basic, or having prior knowledge with the EndNote Library, is recommended
  • incorporate EndNote Library citations into a written MS Word document in the particular style your manuscript requires
  • learn how to locate and import specialized output styles.

Additional sessions will be held on Feb. 12 and March 5, with EndNote Basic from 5:00-6:15 p.m. and EndNote Cite As You Write from 6:15-7:00 p.m.

Our instruction room has EndNote X7.2 on Windows workstations. Attendees may bring their own laptops with EndNote X7.2 downloaded prior to the session. Visit the library’s EndNote LibGuide to download.

Summer 2015 Finishing Fellowship Nominations Open

Applications for summer 2015 finishing fellowships are now being accepted, and are due no later than 4pm, February 19, 2015 to Dr. Debra Charlesworth in the Graduate School. Instructions on the application and evaluation process are found online.

Students are eligible if all of the following criteria are met:

  1. Must be a PhD student.
  2. Must expect to finish during the semester supported as a finishing fellow.
  3. Must have submitted no more than one previous application for a finishing fellowship.
  4. Must be eligible for or in Research Only Mode at the time of application.

Finishing Fellowships provide support to PhD candidates who are close to completing their degrees. These fellowships are available through the generosity of alumni and friends of the University. They are intended to recognize outstanding PhD candidates who are in need of financial support to finish their degrees and are also contributing to the attainment of goals outlined in The Michigan Tech Plan. The Graduate School anticipates funding up to ten fellowships with support ranging from $2000 to full support (stipend + tuition). Students who receive full support through a Finishing Fellowship may not accept any other employment. For example, students cannot be fully supported by a Finishing Fellowship and accept support as a GTA or GRA.

Seminar on Submitting your Dissertation, Thesis, or Report

Students planning on finishing a dissertation, thesis, or report in spring 2015 or summer 2015 are invited a seminar designed to help students understand the submission process and answer questions about it. Faculty and staff who assist students with submissions are also welcome to attend.

Once you register, you will receive a confirmation with the location and a reminder of the date and time, or information on how to join us online.

If you are unable to join us, this seminar will be taped and available online after the event.

2015 Nominations for DeVlieg Fellowships Open

Nominations are now open for the DeVlieg Foundation Fellowships.

All graduate programs may nominate one eligible PhD student per program.  There will be two recipients – each will receive a stipend for summer 2015 plus support for one credit of tuition.  Eligible students will meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Must be a graduate student in one of the fields supported by the DeVlieg Foundation:
    1. Engineering or a closely related field, OR
    2. Wildlife/biology (2015 Summer Research Award in Biology/Wildlife/Natural Resources)
  2. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be enrolled in a PhD program.
  4. Must be nominated by student’s graduate program.  Each PhD program may nominate one student.

Nominations are due no later than 4pm on January 29, 2015 to the Graduate School. Please address to the attention of Debra Charlesworth.
