The Van Pelt and Opie Library is offering a workshop, “Copyright and Your Thesis or Dissertation.” on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 2:00pm.
This workshop will examine the role U.S. Copyright law plays in the thesis or dissertation writing and publishing processes. The use of copyrighted material, publishing agreements and the role of the Digital Commons at Michigan Tech repository will be explored.

Graduate students, has it been a year or two (or longer) since you have had to do any library research? Feel like your information-finding skills are a little rusty? Join us for one of our Library Skills Refresher sessions to brush off the dust. We will cover library services specific to Michigan Tech, as well as a variety of searching techniques and strategies to help you get the most out of your research. Food will be provided.
We are offering multiple sessions of the workshop to accommodate a variety of schedules:

The J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library is offering introductory EndNote workshops. EndNote is a citation management software that helps you easily create and manage bibliographic information and incorporate references into your writing.
Upcoming sessions will be held:
EndNote Basic I – Tuesday, September 16 , 5:00 p.m.
This workshop will introduce users to creating and managing references using the citation management software EndNote. No prior knowledge of EndNote is necessary. In this workshop participants will learn how to construct an Endnote Library in order to effectively organize references and create custom and smart groups to efficiently manage references.
EndNote Basic II – Thursday, September 25, 6:15 p.m.
This workshop will introduce users to incorporating EndNote Library citations into a written document (MS Word). Attending EndNote Basic I or prior knowledge of building and managing an EndNote Library is recommended. In this workshop participants will learn how to successfully incorporate Endnote Library references into their writing process (MS Word), and locate, identify, and import specialized output styles.

GSG’s first Lunch and Learn of the Fall semester will be held on Monday, September 8th. This lunch-n-learn session will focus on various services provided by Information technology and Van Pelt and Opie Library on campus. The event is followed by a brief questionnaire session.

The Van Pelt and Opie Library and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) invite faculty and graduate students to attend a module, consisting of two sequential workshops, Incorporating Information Literacy into Instruction.
Instruction and Learning Librarian Sarah Lucchesi is delivering the module through the CTL’s University Teaching and Learning (UTL) Seminars program. In this module, using the framework of Michigan Tech information literacy rubric for undergraduate students (learning goal #6), we will explore the library’s information resources, options for assistance with additional instruction and assignment elements that allow students to practice each of the information literacy skills. Faculty and graduate students are welcome to register only for this two-workshop series or as a part of the complete UTL Course Design program. The workshop sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, June 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. and Thursday, June 19, from 1 to 2 p.m., in Library 243. Please register by 5 p.m., Tuesday, June 10. The Van Pelt and Opie Library is offering three patent and trademark searching workshops in April. Each will be offered twice; click the date and time or your preferred session to register. All workshops will take place in Library 242.
Basic Patent Searching
This workshop will cover basic patent searching in the USPTO website database using the recommended “Seven Step Strategy.” We will discuss why keyword searching of patents must be supplemented with a classification search, how to identify relevant patent classes and search within them and how to cross-reference related classes.

Advanced Patent Searching
This workshop will cover other database options aside from the USPTO website to search for patents, including patents issued in countries other than the US. We will explore Espacenet, PatentScope and Google Patents and discuss some advanced searching strategies.

Trademark Searching
This workshop will cover the basics of trademarking a product or service, as well as searching both word and image trademarks to ensure your trademark is unique.
