Chateaubriand Fellowship Program

The STEM Chateaubriand Fellowship targets outstanding PhD students enrolled in an American university who wish to conduct part of their doctoral research in a French laboratory for a 4 to 9 month period.  The Office of Science and Technology provide a stipend of up to 1,400 €/month (depending on other sources of funding) and cover the cost of travel and student health insurance.

STEM Chateaubriand fellows are selected through a merit-based competition.  Priority is given to candidates working toward a “double degree” (cotutelle) with their host institution.

All Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) and Health disciplines are eligible. The required level of French remains at the discretion of the host laboratory.

The application deadline is January 31, 2014, for a stay which can begin from September 1, 2014 to April 1, 2015.

DOE Scholars Program is now accepting applications

The Department of Energy (DOE) Scholars Program is now accepting applications for Summer 2014.

The DOE Scholars Program offers unique opportunities that introduce students or post-graduates to the agency’s mission and operations. Participants in the DOE Scholars Program gain a competitive edge as they apply their education, talent and skills in a variety of scientific research settings within the DOE complex. Appointments are available in a variety of disciplines at participating DOE facilities nationwide.

Michigan Space Grant Consortium Funding Opportunities

The Michigan Space Grant Consortium announces funding opportunities in the following categories: Undergraduate Fellowship, Graduate Fellowship, Pre-College Education, Public Outreach, Teacher Training, and Research Seed Grant.

The deadline for proposal packages is no later than Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m.

The internal Michigan Tech deadline is noon on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

U.S. Dept of Energy Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO) Fellowship Program

The Department of Energy (DOE) CBFO Program provides the opportunity to conduct mission-oriented research in DOE’s CBFO in Carlsbad, New Mexico.  The full-time, one-year appointment will start in October/November 2013 or earlier; appointments may be renewed for up to five years, based on program needs, satisfactory performance by the appointee and continued availability of funding.

Eligibility:

  • U.S. Citizens Only.
  • Received (by September 2013) or currently hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution within the past five years.
  • Strong analytical, research and oral and written communication skills and demonstrated capacity for creative thinking.

Application and supporting material must be received by midnight EST on Sunday, September 22, 2013.

Annual stipends will be based on academic level and relevant skills and/or experience; may include additional allowances of up to $500/month for housing and insurance. Travel to appointment may be included.

2014 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

The 2014 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Solicitation has been posted.  Faculty play a critical role in encouraging our most competitive students to apply for fellowship opportunities like the NSF GRFP.  Michigan Tech’s Research Development Office has for the previous three years offered a seminar for all interested applicants.  Based on an internal screening process recommended by the NSF GRFP office, this year the seminar series will only be open to students identified by faculty as competitive applicants.

As you identify students, please keep in mind that competitive applicants are often students who have or will most likely be awarded university teaching or research assistantships. Students who have internal graduate support should still be encouraged to apply.  While fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $32,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees (paid to the institution), which in turn frees up internal funding for other graduate students, the fellowship is more about prestige.  As the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind, the GRFP has a long history of selecting recipients who achieve high levels of success in their future academic and professional careers.  The reputation of the GRFP follows recipients and often helps them become life-long leaders that contribute significantly to both scientific innovation and teaching.  Likewise, students who receive the GRFP call attention to the high-quality graduate education and research ongoing at Michigan Tech.

Eligibility for the GRFP:

  • be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
  • be planning to pursue a research-focused Master’s or Ph.D. program in an NSF-supported field
  • be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited United States graduate institution by Fall 2014
  • have completed no more than twelve months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent) as of August 1, 2013.

Moreover, competitive students should have:

  • a strong academic record of 3.5 GPA or higher
  • the ability to obtain 3 exceptional reference letters– due November 14th
  • previous professional (e.g., internship/enterprise), research (e.g., SURF),  and educational outreach (e.g., K-12, international, community) experiences
  • future research, professional and outreach goals that will potentially benefit society

Michigan Tech’s Research Development Office will formally invite faculty-identified students to participate in a NSF GRFP seminar series.  This eight-week series will help applicants develop submission material (Personal Statement, Relevant Background and Future Goals and Graduate Research Statement) and request letters of reference in a timely and helpful manner.  Speakers include experienced NSF GRFP reviewers and panel chairs, Dr. Pushpathala Murthy who is currently serving as program officer for the NSF GRFP, and previous NSF fellows.

HS-STEM 2012 Summer Internship Program

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. This program is open to graduate students interested in the specific field of Nuclear and Radiological Threat Detection.

Graduate students: $7,000 stipend plus travel expenses

Areas of research: Nuclear engineering, physics, mathematics, statistics, computer sciences, systems engineering, electrical engineering, and material science

10-week research experiences offered at: Argonne, Idaho, Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, Sandia, Savannah River

Other Research facilities: Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Development Center, Plum Island, and more!

Eligibility requirements:

  • Pursuing a degree in an academic discipline related to Nuclear and Radiological Threat Detection
  • By the application deadline, full-time enrollment as a graduate student or undergraduate seniors at a U.S. accredited college or university.
  • By fall 2013, full-time enrollment as a graduate student at a U.S. accredited college or university. For undergraduate seniors: Internship assignment is contingent on the student providing proof of application to a graduate program in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field by March 1, 2013.
  • U.S. citizenship
