Michigan Tech chemistry alumna Amiee (Larchar) Modic ’84 earned the 2025 James Bryant Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching for her authenticity, enthusiasm, and ability to inspire.
Modic grew up in a small town in upstate New York and was drawn to Michigan Tech for the University’s STEM-focused curriculum and close-knit community. She originally pursued chemical engineering, but shortly after graduation took a chance on a teaching position left open by her favorite high school science teacher.
That opportunity led to a newfound passion and a 40-year award-winning teaching career for Modic, who is currently a high school chemistry teacher at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart in Houston, Texas.
