HuskyLEAD presents: #IamRemarkable
Have you ever been in a situation — in a job interview, meeting, or even a social situation — where you had to talk about your achievements? It’s not easy, is it? Many of us struggle when it comes to talking about our own accomplishments. Cultural and gender modesty norms as well as impostor syndrome can prevent anyone from acknowledging their remarkable attributes and expressing their achievements.
#IamRemarkable is a Google initiative empowering women and other underrepresented groups to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond. The program has two goals:
- Improve the self-promotion motivation and skills of women and underrepresented groups
- Challenge the social perception around self-promotion
Trained facilitators Liz Fujita and Gretchen Hein will lead this 90-minute workshop for a small group of students on Tuesday, October 25th at 6 PM in the MUB Superior Room. Participants are encouraged to register in advance on Involvement Link as space is limited.
Congratulations to last week’s RSO Spotlight – Beta Sigma Theta
Beta Sigma Theta has recently partnered with the American Cancer Society to raise money and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. Through the month of September, they have been focused on their philanthropy event Red & Gold Together for Pediatric Cancer. This campaign has consisted of online fundraising initiatives, as well as, their all-day on-campus event. As well, through the month of September, they have been sharing the importance of fighting pediatric cancer through their social media with real-time statistics. Not only were they able to get the Houghton community and Michigan Tech involved, but they also raised over $1,700 for pediatric cancer research. Beta Sigma Theta’s campaign was the first time that the American Cancer Society reached the Upper Peninsula!
If you would like your Registered Student Organization spotlighted, fill out this form to be recognized! Recipients will receive a certificate and be entered to win our RSO spotlight raffle at the end of the year!

Share Your Local Food Stories!
Do you like to garden, forage for mushrooms, grow herbs on your patio, visit the farmers markets, or preserve foods? Are you a farmer, angler, hunter, or local foods advocate?
If so, we invite you to share your experiences and knowledge in a community photo project sharing stories about local foods in our area. Sign-up is open! We live in an area with a vibrant culture of hunting, foraging, fishing, gathering, and growing a diversity of foods. This project will celebrate these while informing next steps in new food systems initiatives, such as a pilot farm-to-school program.
Participants will take part in several small-group meetings in Houghton/Hancock throughout Fall 2022 to share their local food photos and stories, with opportunities to share these in a collective program or exhibit if participants choose. No previous photography or writing experience is necessary.
This research project is part of a larger initiative led by Western UP Food Systems Collaborative partners and funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.
This community research project is open to adults in the Copper Country area who are 18 years and older and who speak English. There is no cost to participate. To learn more, please contact Dr. Angie Carter, ancarter@mtu.edu, 906-487-1431 or email our team at WUPlocalfoodstories@gmail.com

African Students Organization October General Forum
Topic: “Positioning yourself beyond the gowns in the modern world”.
People tend to fantasize about realities, especially about what to expect after completing a series of activities. Hence, some do ignore important parts of their lives while being deeply indulged in these imaginations. Students pursuing graduate studies are often caught in such scenarios due to a lack of information and adequate preparation. To preclude such situations among members and friends of our organization, the African Students Organization is organizing a talk as part of its October General Forum with the theme “positioning yourself beyond the gowns in the modern world”. Invited speakers are former students and members of the organization who are now accomplished in their fields (see the flyer). It promises to be highly impactful! Don’t miss it!
