Film Board Presents a Weekend of Holiday Films

Finals Stressing You Out? Need a Break from Cramming? Join Film Board for a Study Break! All day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we will be watching holiday movies in Fisher 135.  The theatre will be a quiet space to relax, read a book, or get away from your roommate while casually watching a holiday film.  Come and go as you please and concessions will be available.  Hope to see you there!

The Big Bang Extravaganza Hosted by American Chemical Society

The American Chemical Society – Student Chapter invites you to the Big Bang Extravaganza on October 23 at dusk on the DHH Lawn.

Every year we host this event to celebrate the conclusion of chemistry week on mole day (10/23). We will be organizing several exciting and explosive demos on campus for students to view! These demos range from blowing up hydrogen balloons to flash-freezing tasty treats. We will conclude the event with an exciting showcase of our signature sparklers! Be sure to stay for the end, because these aren’t your ordinary sparklers! They pack quite the punch and will be quite an impressive display!

ACS is a student affiliate of the national American Chemical Society dedicated to spreading our love of chemistry. Each year we host chemistry-related events and fundraisers. We aren’t only chemistry or chem Eng. majors, but a collective group of people who share a deep passion for chemistry!

Get Involved with Relay for Life

Have you been touched by cancer? Are you interested in making a difference? Relay for Life at Michigan Tech has been restructured this year, and will be hosting small events throughout the year, such as a chili cook off on November 12, bake sale on December 6-8, canvas painting night in early December, ski races, and video game tournaments. These events will be spread out during the school year, and will be starting in November!

Those who are interested in creating teams to get involved with these events or want to create an event on their own should sign up now on RelayForLife.org, under the Michigan Tech event. This is a great chance for student orgs, Greek orgs, campus departments, and other members of our campus community to get involved and raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

Vaccine Clinics on Campus

UP Health System-Portage will offer meningitis and flu vaccine clinics on Michigan Tech’s campus this fall.

The quadrivalent flu vaccine is by injection at a cost of $40 payable at the time of service. Cash, check or credit card will be accepted.

Students with Michigan Tech’s United Health Care (UHC) student health plan can have their flu vaccine billed to insurance with their UHC member ID card.

The meningitis vaccine is by injection at a cost of $159 with a flu shot or $199 without. Payment is expected at the time of service and will not be billed to insurance. Receipts will be provided and individuals can submit these to insurances to see if they’ll be reimbursed. In order to receive the meningitis vaccine during one of the clinic dates below, you must schedule an appointment by emailing Whitney Boroski.

The dates of the clinics are:

Grammy Winner Dr. Jerry Blackstone Guest Conducts Honors Choir Festival

Please join us next Saturday for a concert that contemplates the forces of nature and weather in its many forms; springtime, a thunderstorm, a prairie fire, and the Schoolchildren’s Blizzard of 1888. The Choirs of Michigan Tech and Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra welcome singers from Northern Michigan University and Upper Peninsula High Schools to perform Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Whispers on the Prairie Wind, under the direction of Dr. Jerry Blackstone, the Grammy Award winning Director of Choral Activities at the University of Michigan. The KSO will also present Beethoven’s Symphony no.6 in F Major (Pastoral), conducted by Dr. Jared Anderson. The Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents “Honors Choir Festival” on Saturday, October 8, at 7:30 PM in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets are on sale now, $19 for adults, $6 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Sexual Violence Support Group for Students

T.E.A.L (To Empower And Liberate) is a group that provides support to Michigan Tech Students who have experienced sexual violence including childhood sexual abuse.

This group provides support to individuals of recent or past sexual violence in a safe, non-judgmental group. Individuals might know the person that committed the violence or it could be a stranger to them. Either way with the help of our group individuals can find understanding and help by sharing their struggles and triumphs with one another and begin to put their lives back together.

T.E.A.L offers a support group that meets every other Thursday from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm starting on 10/13/16. Through discussion, support and education we can help one another. (Location of the meeting is undisclosed – interested students would need to please contact Peggy at psullivan@dialhelp.org)

Lifeguard Training

Earn your American Red Cross Certification in this 7-day training course located at the Michigan Tech SDC Pool. Certification includes Lifeguard and CPR certification and all training materials. All participants must be 15 years of age or older by class start date (documentation required), be able to swim 300 yards without stopping and tread water with legs only for 2 minutes. Class size is limited.

The Student Development Complex lap pool and dive tank are licensed by the State of Michigan and inspected by the Western U.P. District Health Department. Accordingly, the water is analyzed and the temperature is taken daily. The temperature fluctuates between 81-87 degrees and this will depend on the pool usage, outside temperature and water flow rate. The water is replenished automatically due to water lost through splash, backwashing of sand filters and evaporation. This new cool water intake will not be 81 degrees until it is well mixed into the existing pool water.

First Annual Bioblitz Hosted by SFRES

The student clubs within the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (SFRES) are hosting the First-Annual MTU Bioblitz! This campus-wide event will be held on October 2nd, from 10-2. In small groups of ~5, students will attempt to find as many living organisms and correctly identify them within the allowed time period, and the winners of each category will receive a prize! Bioblitz battlegrounds include anywhere on the Michigan Tech Campus, including Tech Trails and Husky Bay.

Muffin and Coffee Sale 

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, the Rotaract club will be hosting a muffin and coffee sale on Wednesday Oct. 5th 7:45-10:30 a.m. Stop by the Husky statue on your way to class and pick up a muffin and a cup of Biggby coffee. All proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Derek Thompson, Sr. Editor of The Atlantic, to Speak at the Rozsa

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts presents Derek Thompson, who will discuss educational, economic, and political topics in his lecture What Will Election 2016 Mean to YOUR Future on Wednesday, October 5, at 7:30 PM.

Derek Thompson is a senior editor for The Atlantic magazine and the author of its 2015 cover story “A World Without Work” about the future of technology and employment. He also writes the business column for the magazine and contributes to the website on issues ranging from behavioral psychology to the economics of entertainment. Thompson is a weekly contributor to “Here and Now,” the national afternoon news show on NPR, and he appears regularly on CBS and MSNBC. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Columbia Journalism School. He has appeared on numerous lists, including Folio’s 15 Under 30 in Media. Thompson is currently working on his first book about the science of hits in pop culture.

Skate with the Huskies Saturday, 9/24

Annual Skate With The Huskies on Saturday, September 24 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The hockey team will be playing a scrimmage starting at 11 a.m. with the fans allowed on the ice after.

The first 150 fans to the scrimmage will get hot dogs from Vollwerth’s and there will be free posters for the players to sign on the ice.

Tech fans can catch a glimpse of the 2016-17 Michigan Tech hockey Huskies before they travel to Minnesota Duluth to open the season on October 1-2. The first home series is October 14-15 against Alabama Huntsville.

The Huskies will be defending the MacNaughton Cup after going 23-9-5 overall last year and 18-7-3 in the WCHA. The nine losses were the fewest since 1975-76, and the MacNaughton Cup returned home to Houghton for the first time since that same season.

Fans looking to purchase season ticket packages can do so at the SDC Central Ticket Office for $255. Each package includes one reserved seat at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena for each of Tech’s 14 regular season home games and the first round of the WCHA Playoffs. Single game tickets are also on sale for $18 for adults and $10 for youth. All tickets can be purchased at the SDC Central Ticket Office, online at BuyHuskiesTickets.com or over the phone at 906-487-2073.

Muck Run 2016

Runners of all abilities are invited to the Muck Run on October 29 at 10:00 AM at the Michigan Tech Trails. The Muck Run is a trail 5k through mud, muck, and maybe even snow hosted by the Michigan Tech Cross Country teams. There are door prizes as well as awards for each age group and the Best Halloween Costume. Rozsa A-Space Gallery Presents Flats and Rounds

The Rozsa Center and Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents the first Rozsa A-Space Gallery show of the 2016-17 Season: Flats and Rounds, an exhibition of the work of two artists, Kathleen McCloud and Sarah Hewitt. Flats and Rounds opens with a public reception on Friday, September 30, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and will continue through November 18. The reception is free and open to the public, and gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM and Saturday from 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Hewitt will also create a weaving installation on-site, in the Rozsa Lobby, from October 20 – 26th. A public lecture by Hewitt to discuss her work further will be held in the Rozsa on the evening of Tuesday, October 25.
