Diwali Night 2014 Final Poster A2

14. Celebrate Diwali Night Saturday with Indian Food and Entertainment

Diwali Night, the Indian festival of lights, has become a tradition far from its Indian roots—at Michigan Tech. This Saturday, Dec. 6, is Diwali Night at Tech, hosted by the Indian Students Association (ISA).

Dinner, served from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Commons, will include Hara Bhara Kabab—a vegetable patty stuffed with spinach, potatoes and green peas; Chicken Mughlai—a cashew curry chicken; Paneer Kadai—a vegetarian entree of cottage cheese in tomato-based curry; pita bread; Kashmiri Pulav—Basmati rice cooked in Indian spices and dried fruits; and Vermicelli Kheer—a dessert of flavored vermicelli pudding with milk and sugar.

After dinner, there will be a performance at 7:30 p.m. at the Rozsa Center, on the theme “The Wonder Years,” focusing on college life with friends. The Indian Students Association band will play Indian music. Drama and dance will include Indian classical Bharatnatyam, from southern India; folk dances including Bhangra or Punjabi from North India, and Lavani, which is Maharashtrian folk dancing from the West of India, and the Western hip-hop.

There are various legends about the origin of Diwali. Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. In Bengal, the festival is dedicated to the worship of Kali, the dark goddess of strength. Ganesha, the elephant-headed god who is the symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom is also worshipped in most Hindu homes during Diwali. The festival also commemorates the return of Rama, along with Sita and Lakshman, from his 14-year exile and the vanquishing of the demon-king Ravana.

Tickets include dinner and the performance. The cost is $15 for the general public and $8 for ISA members.

Tickets for the event are available at the following:

Rozsa Center webpage
SDC Ticket Office—in person or by calling 7-2073
MUB Commons Promotion Desk—11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Dec. 5
Rozsa Box Office—Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. for the performance only

5. 41 North Film Festival

The 41 North Film Festival (formerly Northern Lights Film Festival) celebrates its 10th anniversary with a name change and an outstanding slate of recent award-winning films and special guests. It will be held Oct. 23-26 in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. The festival is free. Kicking off the festival this year will be director Mark Levinson and his documentary Particle Fever, which follows six scientists involved in the launch of the Large Hadron Collider—the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet. The film, screened Thursday evening, provides an unprecedented window into this major scientific breakthrough as it happened. Edited by Academy Award–winner Walter Murch, the film celebrates human discovery and raises important questions about the limits of human knowledge. An interesting contrast to Particle Fever is The Circle, a perspective on the Large Hadron Collider from above ground. Director Bram Conjaerts delves into the experiences of the people who live above the LHC along its 27- kilometer path and how they perceive living above this massive project and its lofty goals.

Also on tap is Meet the Patels, a project that started as a family vacation video and turned into the story of actor/director Ravi Patel and his relationship with the woman of his dream and his parents. His father, in fact, is a Tech alumnus, and father and son will participate in a question-and- answer session following the screening.

Additional screenings include The Overnighters and Boyhood on Saturday, and Alive Inside and Born to Fly: Elizabeth Streb vs. Gravity on Sunday. Friday features Coherence and a collection of student Academy Award winners in addition to Meet the Patels.

This year’s festival is sponsored by the Department of Humanities, Visual and Performing Arts, the College of Sciences and Arts, the Office of Institutional Equity, and the Visiting Women & Minority Lecturer/Scholar Series (VWMLS) which is funded by a grant to the Office of Institutional Equity from the State of Michigan’s King-Chavez-Parks Initiative.

8. Bold New Camelot Comes to Rozsa Center
Local fourth grader makes professional debut as Tom of Warwick

The national tour of Lerner & Lowe’s legendary musical, Camelot, arrives at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts for one night only on October 21 at 7:30 PM. This bold new interpretation of the four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical tells the story of King Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot. Houghton Elementary fourth grade student Tom Knewtson, who auditioned in September, appears at the end of Act Two as Tom of Warwick. Tickets to Camelot are $22 for adults and $11 for youth 17 and under. Michigan Tech student tickets are free with the Experience Tech Fee.The production is a sumptuous, visually arresting reimagining of the time-honored fable of chivalry, majesty and romance. “This is sort of a reinvention of Camelot. It’s the story as you’ve never seen it before,” said Rozsa Center Interim Director Mary Muncil. “This version is a darker, grittier, more dramatic rendition. Never has this story been more captivating.” The story tells of King Arthur, who rules his kingdom with new ideals, bringing peace to a troubled land. But, when his beautiful new Queen Guinevere and the dashing Sir Lancelot, his most trusted knight, give in to their passion for one another, one of the most fabled love triangles of all time ensues.

Although this is 10-year-old Knewtson’s debut at the Rozsa, his previous credits include Michael Darling (Peter Pan), Longtail (Snow White) and a shepherd (Best Christmas Pageant Ever) at the Broadway Theatre in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Tom is a dream role for a young actor: a boy destined to become a knight, who inspires Arthur and gives him hope for the future. The original 1960 production of Camelot ran on Broadway for 873 performances and spawned several revivals, foreign productions and the 1967 film. Phoenix Entertainment, by special arrangement with Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc., is producing the North American tour. 21. New Just In Case App Released

One easily accessible resource to help students find critical contact and support information is Michigan Tech’s Just in Case smartphone app.

This app provides quick access to resources that students can connect to regarding thoughts of hurting oneself or others, sexual violence/assault, feeling overwhelmed or being worried about a friend. Just in Case provides students with information about what to do in an emergency, how to get connected to care, as well as some strategies to assist with feelings of being overwhelmed.

This serves as one of the tools that our campus can use for suicide prevention and early intervention with students who need assistance and resources. As a University we are being asked to actively participate in a new public awareness campaign regarding sexual misconduct, and helping connect students who have concerns is one of the ways that we can fulfill this responsibility.

The Just in Case app can be found listed under Michigan Tech’s smartphone app as well as accessed directly by scanning a QR code on posters and advertisements. Users can also gain access by visiting the web page.

For questions, comments or concerns contact Karmen Markham, Case Manager for Counseling Services, at 7-2538 or karmen@mtu.edu.

brett-young

24. Singer Songwriter, Brett Young, Performing

Student Activities is hosting Brett Young on Saturday, October 11 at 8:00 PM in the Wadsworth Dining Hall. This event is no charge for students.

With three independent albums already under his belt, Brett recently took his newest batch of songs into Blackberry Studios in Nashville, with David Hall at the production helm, known for his GRAMMY Award winning work as an engineer, with artists of nearly every genre. And true to form, showcasing that intensity and emotion in his recordings, of songs like “Fire” and “Breathe Again.”

“I grew up with Al Green, Marvin Gaye—soul singers. I like that the emotion carries the songs, where the music is almost secondary,” he says. “Van Morrison’s ‘Crazy Love’—that’s just timeless. They influence me; as a songwriter and a performer, I want to connect like they did. And when your audience feels like they can relate, then you have something much more special than a show, or a sale. You have a fan.”

When it comes to Brett Young, it isn’t so far from a pitcher’s mound to a major stage, and it doesn’t really matter what kind of Big Show you’re talking about. Because in the end, when you have that thing called heart, it shows. You may see it in his eyes, but you’ll hear it in his voice.

Brett has since played venues ranging from House of Blues to Troubadour, and shared the stage with such artists as Mandy Moore, Tyrone Wells, Jason Reeves, Gavin Degraw, Tyler Hilton, Katy Perry, Hoku and many more. Brett recently came off of a 40 city National Tour with Tyrone Wells and is currently traveling and playing all over the country.
