Enterprise Day (Feb 20 6-8 pm)

Enterprise Day is happening Feb. 20 from 6-8 p.m. in the MUB Ballroom (A&B).

During this time, students will learn more about Enterprise by talking with program staff and students from various Enterprise teams, all in one place. Teams will be spread out across the MUB Ballroom.

Transportation Seminar – October 6th

WORLD’S FAIRS AND TRANSPORTATION INNOVATION 

Abstract: World Fairs have been forgotten by most who live in North America because the last one was held in 1986 in Vancouver, Canada. However, they are still being held in other countries on specific themes. The 20th Century World’s Fairs were major events celebrated in the host city and the world, and transportation exhibits and projects were always a popular feature of these expositions. The presentation will explore the history of World’s Fairs and the transportation innovations that have amazed Fair attendees through the years.

Bio: Dr. Bill Sproule is a Professor Emeritus at Michigan Technological University, where he taught and directed research projects in transportation engineering, traffic safety, public transit, airport planning and design, and hockey history for almost 25 years. He has been active in several professional associations including ASCE, ITE, TRB, the American Planning Association, and the Society for International Hockey Research. Bill retired five years ago but has continued his work in automated people movers and hockey history.

Army ROTC Summer Leadership Opportunity

I hope this message finds you well. I can imagine you are busy as the school year wraps up. I am reaching out to pass along some information on Army ROTC’s Summer Leadership Program (Basic Camp). Michigan Tech has the ability to sponsor additional attendees, so any assistance in spreading the word is greatly appreciated! 

What is Summer Leadership Program (Basic Camp)?

This program is a month-long training held annually at Ft. Knox Kentucky. The program is designed to help college students experience Army ROTC and decide if it is something they would like to continue. Unlike the traditional Basic Training for enlistment, this program focuses on the leadership and critical thinking skills needed to succeed as an Army Officer. 

There is no commitment to enroll or complete ROTC, but those who complete and elect to continue can earn a $5,000 bonus / 2-Year Full Tuition Scholarship. There is no cost for the student to attend. 

Ideal candidates would be academic sophomores/juniors with two years remaining. There are certain eligibility requirements, such as U.S. citizenship and health standards. I am happy to provide additional details to anyone interested. 

Beyond this opportunity, please feel free to contact me with questions. We are proud to have the top ranked Army ROTC program in our region. Our Cadets have a near 100% placement rate into internships and their career branches of choice. While some choose to compete for Active Duty, we have a substantial number who serve part-time in a reserve component and pursue a career in the private sector.

Multiplanetary INnovation Enterprise (MINE) has begun recruiting for the Fall 2023 semester. If you are interested in supporting our goal to develop technologies that can withstand the harsh environments on Earth or across Space then MINE is the right place for you!

Information Session

If you are interested and would like more information please come see us at our info session on Thursday, March 23rd, 6-7pm in MEEM 111 or Monday, March 27th, 6-7pm in MEEM 111. We will have pizza at both info sessions!

Who We Are

The Multiplanetary INnovation Enterprise (MINE) is a student-led group that is focused on giving students hands-on experience designing, building, and testing remotely operated vehicles to run in extreme environments, including an annual competition run by NASA. The enterprise offers students independence in their learning and strengthens their skills in communication, time management, problem solving, presentation and technical writing skills, project management, and leadership. While our hands-on projects focus on building skills and learning concepts, we emphasize small groups, collaboration, and teamwork.

We are currently working on 3 projects: 

·  Lunabotics Astro-Huskies are developing and building a lunar rover for NASA’s annual robotic mining competition. This year our focus was developing a robot to mine icy regolith on the moon however in the future our goal will be more construction oriented.

·  DIVER (Deep Investigation Vehicle for Energy Resources) aims to impact the energy industry by providing it with an inspection vehicle for the exploration of flooded mines. The technical challenges of this project include making the vehicle capable of withstanding extreme water-pressure, navigating dynamic currents, and the collection of water-quality and spatial data.

·  Lunar Trencher is building and testing a bucket ladder excavator attachment for a lunar field rover where the goal is to make it space rated. The team is currently working on getting the trencher into a vacuum chamber that simulates lunar conditions, to demonstrate that it could operate on the moon.
