Undergraduate Research Opportunity

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is currently taking applications for undergraduates to participate in a National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site in Advanced Infrastructural Materials located in Lafayette, LA.

They are seeking highly motivated undergraduate students to participate in a life-changing research experience. Students accepted to this competitive program will have the opportunity to spend 10 weeks (May 25-July 31, 2020) in the heart of Cajun Country in Lafayette, Louisiana, working with researchers in interdisciplinary fields related to civil engineering and infrastructure materials.  

Students involved in research in this REU program will participate in a vibrant research community engaged in innovative, multidisciplinary research to address some of the most pressing infrastructural problems. Students will be paired with a faculty mentor and engaged in hands-on research, field trips, and meet and greets with leading researchers in materials science and civil engineering. Students will develop valuable skills conducting literature reviews, scientific integrity, scientific writing, innovation in research, data collection and analysis, and presentation of research findings to diverse audiences.  Students will gain the education, networking opportunities, and mentorship to prepare them for further academic pursuits in graduate school and future careers in science, technology, engineering and math. For ten (10) weeks during summer 2020, REU students will be housed on-campus at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This campus is located in the heart of Cajun Culture and is within walking distance from downtown shopping, nightlife, and some of the best Cajun restaurants in the country.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette is seeking diverse students from universities and colleges nationwide. Students from underrepresented groups, first generation college students, and students without undergraduate research opportunities at their home universities or colleges are highly encouraged to apply. 

Selected students will receive on-campus housing, monetary compensation ($500/week), travel support (up to $400), and research support.

This position will assist in completing or overseeing a variety of assignments in or more specialized areas of traffic engineering involving actions taken to reduce highway crashes.  This position will assist the Safety Data and Modeling Engineering Specialist in providing support to the regions and Transportation Service Centers (TSC’s) in using software and tools associated with the department’s implementation of the AASHTO Highway Safety Manual (HSM) and the supportive analytical tools (Safety Analyst, Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSMDM), HSM Spreadsheets).

Job Definition:

Definition: Under direction of the Wastewater Treatment Engineering and Operations Manager and the general supervision of the Facility Planning Coordinator, performs process control activities and monitors process control equipment related to City wastewater treatment plant and lift station operations.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This position is responsible for performing field work and analysis that supports successful process control regarding wastewater treatment plant assets, lift stations, control structures, and associated equipment. Typical duties may include process sampling, microscopic analysis, calculation of numerical data from process observations, generating internal reports regarding facility performance and effectiveness, gathering data related to new equipment needed or existing equipment needing repair or improvement.

Knowledge:

Thorough knowledge of:

  • SCADA systems and PLCs
  • Modern wastewater treatment operations and maintenance and related engineering principles, practices and techniques

Working knowledge of:

  • Construction observation tasks for treatment facility construction projects
  • WPDES Permit requirements

Some knowledge of:

  • Wastewater, stormwater and collection system operations, maintenance and engineering
  • Equipment and maintenance requirements of a wastewater system
  • Computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets and data base systems, and geographic information systems

Ability to:

  • Conduct research regarding equipment alternatives, analyze results and prepare the results
  • Draw conclusions from data collected
  • Understand and apply state and federal laws which apply to proper operation and maintenance of sewer systems, wastewater utilities, stormwater utilities as well as related engineering principles
  • Perform sampling, flow monitoring equipment maintenance, and data collection from the field
  • Write technical reports, procedures specifications, scopes of work, needs assessments, and recommendations to management
  • Implement training programs and train a variety of staff levels
