The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking a geologist to join our Minneapolis office. In this hybrid role, you will support the Assessment and Remediation business unit and undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to the investigation, evaluation, and remediation of contaminated sites. Assignments may include working as an individual or as part of a project team to assist with environmental site assessments; on-site investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and vapor; aquifer test performance and analysis; construction observation; development of site conceptual models; and preparation of drilling logs, geologic maps, cross-sections, and technical reports.

On-site investigation tasks may include observing drilling and monitoring well installation, classifying soil and bedrock samples, and collecting samples for field screening and laboratory analysis. Fieldwork opportunities for this position will be year-round and include some out-of-town travel.

Your impact – key responsibilities

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: anticipated range of $65,000–$75,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Each year, NAGT makes eighteen $750 awards to undergraduate students to facilitate their study of field geoscience. These awards, previously given to students who attend a traditional summer field camp, are now available for students attending field-based courses at any time of year and in any format: face-to-face, virtual, or hybrid. The intent of the awards is to support students’ participation in intensive field courses in any aspect of geoscience (including geophysics, soil science, hydrology, etc.) that focuses on students practicing skills of field observation, data collection, analysis and synthesis.

Awardees are selected based on the importance of the field experience in meeting their educational and career goals, the quality of the field aspects of the course, and the importance of the financial award in allowing them to participate in the program. In addition, the committee endeavors to select awardees that expand the diversity of people studying geosciences in the field and a collaboration with the Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) funds two additional awards specifically for women.

Scholarship Eligibility and Application

Requirements:

  • Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply.
  • Students must be planning to attend a field course in the geosciences that is at least a total of three weeks in duration (it is not necessary that these be consecutive) and that engages the student primarily in field work, rather than classroom work. Field courses can be face-to-face, virtual, or hybrid.

Q: What is the timeline for the award process?

A: The deadline for student applications is February 14th and the deadline for faculty references is February 21st. Once the applications are complete with references, they will be sent to the committee and their process takes several weeks. We usually notify students in mid to late March.

Q: Do I need to contact my reference?

A: NAGT will contact the reference listed on your application and follow up with them. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner your reference will be contacted and the more time they have to write your recommendation.
