Thomas Oommen (DataS), associate professor of geological and mining engineering and sciences, was recently featured in a Michigan Tech Unscripted Research Blog titled, ” Geohazards on the Horizon.”
Oommen was part of a US team in Mumbai this August working on disaster management curriculum with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), the only institution in all of Mumbai—one of the world’s largest cities with 19 million people—to offer a degree in disaster management.

Michigan Tech hosted two week-long GenCyber camps this summer. The first, held June 17–21, 2019, hosted 30 local middle/high school students. The second camp, August 12–16, 2019, hosted 21 local K-12 teachers. Camp participants gained cybersecurity knowledge, understood correct and safe online behavior, and explored ways to deliver cybersecurity content in K-12 curricula.

Jeremy Bos’ (DataS/ECE) Paulding Lights Research Part of NPR and WXPR Stories
CPS Center Director, Shiyan Hu and collaborators, published a keynote paper in IEEE Transactions on CAD, entitled, “Design Automation of Cyber-Physical Systems: Challenges, Advances, and Opportunities”. Their work was featured in the Michigan Tech News story, “Streamlining the Internet of Things and Other Cyber-Physical Systems”. The article highlights how their work lays the groundwork for better design in cyber-physical systems and was featured as a headline on NSF Science360and the NSF Computer and Network Systems (CNS) website.
The ACM magazine, Interactions, is featuring HCC Center Director, Philart Jeon’s, Mind Music Machine (tri-M) Lab this month. The Tri-M Lab is a transdisciplinary research group based in the departments of Cognitive Science and Computer Science at Michigan Tech. The research goal of the lab is understanding the mechanisms of the human mind and designing better interactions between people and technologies. Researchers utilize various instruments, including computer vision technologies, display wall, digital audio workstation, driving simulators, neurophysiological equipment, and robots.
