Sale of Quincy Hill Property May Lead to Scholarships

“The Quincy Mine Hoist Association agrees that the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum should be on the Michigan Tech campus,” said Dave Jukuri, president of the QMHA. “Michigan Tech and the Association have cooperated on many projects and will continue to do so. If we eventually sell the Quincy Hill property, the proceeds will go to help provide scholarships for metallurgy, mining, geology and minerals studies at Michigan Tech.”

PhD graduate student in MSE Andrew H. Baker is a Spring 2014 recipient of Michigan Tech’s Graduate Student Service Award.

Students are nominated for having exhibited an outstanding contribution to graduate education at Michigan Tech as an officer or other member of the Graduate School Government. Baker’s advisor is Stephen L. Kampe. Awards will be presented at the Graduate Student Government award ceremony that is held in the spring.

Scholarship Opportunity for Junior and Senior Engineering Students and Prospective Engineering Graduate Students

The Michigan Tech SSEED program (funded by NSF S-STEM) will award 35 undergraduate scholarships of $1,000-$5,000 to junior and senior engineering students and five graduate fellowships of $8,000 to engineering students in 2014-15. Please share this information with qualified students.

The purpose of the undergraduate scholarships is to improve the retention of upper-division engineering students who have financial need and other risk factors that make it difficult to complete their undergraduate degree. The purpose of the graduate fellowships is to improve the recruitment of women and minorities to graduate school in engineering. The program also features mentoring and professional development opportunities. Additional information and applications can be found at www.doe.mtu.edu/sseed/. Alexandra Glover Nominated for Goldwater Scholarship

Michigan Tech Nominates Two for Goldwater Scholarships

Michigan Tech has nominated two students, Alexandra Glover and Caleb Vogt, for Goldwater scholarships.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 in honor of former senator and 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. The scholarship is considered the premier undergraduate award for students pursuing degrees in science, math and engineering.

Glover is majoring in materials science and is conducting research under the direction of Associate Professor Joshua Pearce (MSE/ECE). Her work focuses on sustainable development, scientific instrument design and testing, and 3D printing. In particular, she is interested in developing an aluminum alloy for 3D metal printers. Glover is a coauthor on three publications and has a fourth in review.

Blended Learning Grant for ACMAL and Joshua Pearce

In early November, the William G. Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning invited faculty to submit proposals to support blended learning course innovations. Proposals were accepted at three levels ($1,000, $5,000 and $10,000), and a total of $50,000 was originally planned to be awarded during this cycle.

The ACMAL facility was awarded $1,000 for “ACMAL Training Modules.”

In the Department of Materials and Science Engineering, Joshua Pearce was awarded $10,000 for “3D Printing Blended Course.”

M-Making a D-Difference

It was a tradition for the DZs, according to Suki Miftah, a third-year materials science and engineering major from Baltimore.

“Last year, we raked on Agate Street, we did the Chassell cemetery and the playground at Daniell Heights the year before that,” she said.

They all planned on attending the Northern hockey name that night, and some had been in Marquette the night before. “We played well,” Miftah said. “It was fun.”
