Heritage Day of Muslim Countries

Come and learn about Muslim culture, traditions, and customs on Tuesday, November 17 from 11:30-1:30 in the MUB Ballroom A2 . This is a great opportunity to meet students from different nationalities including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Palestine. Khana Khazana Serving Moroccan Food

Maghrebi mint tea is a green tea prepared with spearmint leaves and sugar, traditional to the Greater Maghreb region most closely associated with Morocco.
The serving of the tea can take a ceremonial form, especially when prepared for a guest. The tea is traditionally made by the head male in the family, and offered to guests as a sign of hospitality. Typically, at least three glasses of tea are served, and it is considered impolite to refuse it.

Moroccan lamb tagine
A tagine is a sweet and warmly spiced Moroccan stew in which meat and/or vegetables and pulses are slowly simmered. This is a traditional Moroccan lamb tagine simmered in numerous spices. Lamb and apricots is a lovely combination for that.

HuskyLEAD – Planning an Organization Event

The next HuskyLEAD session will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 in the Memorial Union Building Alumni Lounge at 6PM and will last for one hour only. The subject will be “Planning an Organization Event from Start to Finish” and the presenter will be Maryann Wilcox, Student Activities.

Tuesday’s workshop will help you to turn your event idea into a reality – everything including hiring speakers and professionals, budgets, funding sources, space reservations, publicity, and use of campus and community resources will be discussed. HuskyLEAD is a series of workshops designed to develop the personal, academic, professional and organizational leadership skills of students. All students are welcomed and you need not be a member of an organization to attend this session. The Nutcracker at the Rozsa

Rehearsals are underway for The Nutcracker! Aspiring dancers from many area schools: Houghton, Hancock, Baraga, Lake Linden Hubbell, CLK, Michigan Tech, Gogebic and others; have been training and rehearsing for their upcoming performances of “The Nutcracker.”  Young dancers will take the stage to create this magical Christmas fairytale with the Minnesota Ballet and Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra on Dec. 4 -5, 2015 at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. 

Tickets are on sale now, $25 for adults, $10 for youth. Special for the Nutcracker performances only, a $55 “family package” includes two adults and two youth tickets, and additional youth tickets can be added on for $6 each. Aquila Theatre Presents a Minimal, Starkly Beautiful Romeo and Juliet

The story is so well known, star-crossed lovers who are doomed from the start, so why is this production special? This minimal adaptation is a joy of the senses: Simple, pared-down and shadowy, Aquila Theatre’s Romeo and Juliet, directed and adapted by Desiree Sanchez, is a completely new way to experience one of Shakespeare’s most iconic plays. Shakespeare’s eight plus actors are cut down to five, the original seventeen roles reduced to eight. The story is condensed, focused, and chiseled away at until it stands out in uncluttered relief.

Public Talk on African American History in Michigan

As part of the “Black Voices in the Copper Country” project, the Michigan Tech Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections will host a talk by Michelle S. Johnson, a community historian with the Michigan Historical Center in Lansing. The event will be held at 4:00PM October 27 at the Van Pelt and Opie Library.

The talk, “Exhibits for New Century: Researching the African American Experience in Michigan from the Copper Country to the Capital,” will explore the historical center’s Exhibits for a New Century project, which is an interpretive exhibit documenting the African American experience across the state.

Upper Peninsula Power Co. customers can recycle their old refrigerators, freezers and more Saturday and get paid for their trouble.

Efficiency UNITED is accepting working freezers, refrigerators, room air conditioners and dehumidifiers (sorry, no stoves or electronics) between 11:00AM to 4:00PM Saturday, at Dee Stadium.

**To participate, bring a recent UPPCO bill along with your clean, empty appliances to the Energy Show. You will receive $50 each for refrigerators and freezers and $15 for dehumidifiers and air conditioners.

“This is a great way to get rid of that energy-hogging appliance, especially if you are moving up to a new energy-efficient model,” said civil engineering senior Lauren Krueger, past president of the Michigan Tech chapter of Rotaract, which is co-sponsoring the event with the Houghton Energy Efficiency Team (HEET). “Old refrigerators use up to four times as much electricity as the latest ENERGY STAR brands.”

Copper Country Track Club Glow Run

The Copper Country Track Club Glow Run is Saturday, October 17 at the Tech Trails, main trailhead off of Sharon Ave (ski stadium). The race start at 8:00PM with 3K and 6K distances (one or 2 laps of the course). It is $5 to register per person, glow in the dark wristbands and glow sticks are included.

Race day registration/check in starts at 7:00PM or you can pre-register using Google Form. For more information email Brent.

Awards are given to the top male and female in the 6K. There are no other official results. The course will be flat and good footing (no Hairpin or other lower loops). If you attend and are not a pass holder, consider donating to the Tech Trails.

Lollapalooza with violas? Picture a host of young Kurt Cobains with violins. Playing classical music. And, instead of Nirvana, we’ll have the stars of the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, special guest artists, along with the emerging, talented violists of the Keweenaw region-all on stage together at the Rozsa! What is a viola you ask? According to Wikipedia: “The viola is a bowed string instrument that is slightly larger than a violin, with a lower and deeper sound.” The KSO’s Violapalooza this Saturday will feature many, many violas! Have you eaten in the Memorial Union Food Court, or another campus retail dining outlet this semester? If so, Dining Services would like your feedback on your experience. Used Bikes and Kayaks Available for Purchase at the OAP

The Outdoor Adventure Program at 207 East Street is upgrading bikes and kayaks, which means gently used equipment for sale! They will be selling the following items:

• 2014 29″ Trek Fuel EX7 Full Suspension ($1200)
• Trek EX Caliber 9 Hardtail ($500)
• We have a limited number of bikes and sizes available.
• Widerness Systems Pungo 12ft.($150-$400) recreational kayaks

They will begin taking non-refundable deposits on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at noon upon opening of the rental center.  A 50% deposit is required to hold the item, with the balance due on or before October 16. All items will be available for pick up after the season, October 16, 2015.

Items are available on a first come first served basis. Items are available for your inspection at the OAP Monday-Thursday, 12-5 PM, unless rented out. 

REMINDER: Flu Vaccine Clinics Announced

Portage Health will offer four flu vaccine clinics on campus this fall. The vaccine is by injection at a cost of $30 payable at the time of service. Cash, check or credit card will be accepted. Shots will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis; no appointment is necessary. Employees, retirees, family members and students are welcome to attend one of the flu clinics. Anyone under the age of 18 cannot be vaccinated without parental permission. A spouse and/or child may attend without the employee. Be prepared to show a picture ID and insurance card. If you are insured by Michigan Tech’s Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) health plan, your vaccine is free of charge and will be billed to insurance if you present your BCBSM member ID card at the time of service. This does not include retirees that have Blue Cross insurance through MPSERS. Students with Michigan Tech’s United Health Care (UHC) student health plan can also have their vaccine billed to insurance with their UHC member ID card. The flu clinics are as follows: From noon to 4 p.m. October 21 during the Health Fair in the Memorial Union Isle Royale Ballroom. The will also be three additional clinics held in the Memorial Union Building:

The Railroad Engineering and Activities will be having our second General Business Meeting of the semester on Tuesday (10/13) at 7:00 PM in Fisher 131. Club members that had internships over the summer will be sharing how they spent their time working in the rail industry. We will also be providing tips and tricks on how to build a good resume (just in time for Rail Day Expo). Community Outdoor Nature Programs for Families

Community Outdoor Nature Programs for Families are free and open to the public. Below are the upcoming sessions. 7:30 -11:00AM, Saturday—Trapping and observations of birds and small mammals, with Jesse Knowlton and Dan Haskell (SFRES). Find out what lives at the Marsin Nature Area. The Keweenaw Land Trust is looking for citizen scientists (no experience necessary) to help document observations of birds, small mammals, and other wildlife on the property. Guided hikes will leave the Retreat at 8 a.m., rain or shine. 6-7:30 PM., Monday—Making Apple Cider (bring your own apples and jugs to take home) with Chris Hohnholt (SFRES), at Nara Nature Center. What to Bring: Dress for the weather and wear good walking shoes. This program is funded by the Michigan Association of Environmental Professionals and coordinated by the Western U.P. Center for Science, Math and Environmental Education and the Michigan Tech Center for Science and Environmental Outreach. For more information, call 7-3341.

City of Houghton Night Parking Ban Begins November 1

The following is a description of our city ordinance concerning winter parking. This is pertinent information for the students.

Chapter 82 Sec. 82-68. Restricted times, locations.

It shall be unlawful for any person to stand or park a vehicle, or to cause to permit a vehicle to be parked or left unattended between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. of any day on any of the streets or highways of the city, or in any city parking facility, during the period from November 1 through April 30. It shall be unlawful to park on Shelden Avenue from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on any day of the year. (Ord. No. 104, ‘ 8.25, 7-10-1996) Vehicles left during the restricted hours will be ticketed and may be towed during snow removal or road maintenance. Persons are allowed to park vehicles on a lawn or side yard when no other parking area is available during the period from November 1 through April 30 only. Parking on lawns and side yards during the period from May 1 through October 31 is prohibited.

Baseball Club Hosting GVSU at Home

The Baseball Club at Michigan Tech will be hosting GVSU at our home field in Kearsarge in a double header starting at 12:00 pm on September 26th, and a single game starting at 10:00 AM on September 27. The field is located at the intersection of School St. and Church St. in Kearsarge.

Pi Mile, a 5k to Support the UP Food Bank

The Triangle Fraternity is hosting a 5k Walk/Run on October 4 at 10:00 AM and proceeds support the UP Food Bank. At the end of the 5k you will get a chance to pie a Triangle Fraternity Brother and Alpha Gamma Delta will be selling homemade pies. You can also win pies as prizes for doing well in the 5k. Chinese cuisine is on the menu for Friday’s Khana Khazana in the Memorial Union Building. Serving is from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The menu features P.F. Chang’s Chicken Lettuce Wraps—seasoned ground chicken, mushroom, peas, water chestnuts and onion seasoned and served in lettuce leaves (Vegetarian version with tofu available); Chinese Grilled Chicken—Chicken, coated with honey, hoisin sauce, lemon, garlic, soy sauce and ginger and grilled to perfection; and Chinese Fried Rice— Rice, egg, carrots, peas, green onion and bean sprouts seasoned and fried.

2015 Keweenaw Color Run: Sept 20, 2015

This event is meant to bring students and community members from different backgrounds and cultures together for hours of entertainment and fitness. With the purchase of your ticket, you will receive a free T-shirt at the beginning of the event in front of the MUB. After that, you may choose whether to partake in either a 2.5k or 5k filled with more color powder than you can handle. Once the run is finished, we will be celebrating with post race food and music.

Registration cost: $15 for Tech Students, $18 for Non-Students

The Rozsa Gallery Transformed: Project Learning Lab Introduces Two New Art Spaces

Michigan Tech’s Rozsa Center and The Department of Visual and Performing Arts announces Project Learning Lab, an innovative arts classroom for Michigan Tech students and the community.

Project Learning Lab turns the Rozsa Gallery into two spaces: A professional gallery, A-Space, which presents its first professional exhibition from September 25 – November 14, Senses of Land; and gallery b: An active learning classroom, gallery b, is a cutting-edge Visual Arts experiment that takes place within the Rozsa gallery. There will be an opening reception and gallery discussion in A-Space for Senses of Land from 6:00 – 7:00 PM on October 10.

Project Learning Lab is open M-F, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM., and on Saturdays from 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM. It is free and open to the public.

Dr. Henry Pollack’s Lecture and Multimedia installation A World Without Ice

Michigan Technological University’s Rozsa Center in collaboration with The Department of Visual and Performing Arts, The Provost’s Office, and The Great Lakes Research Center present Dr. Henry Pollack’s lecture and multimedia installation A World Without Ice. The lecture will take place on Thursday, September 24, at 7:30 PM at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. The lecture is free, but due to limited seating reserved tickets are required.

The multimedia installation will take place in the McArdle Theatre, on the second floor of the Walker Center, on Friday, Sept. 25 – Tuesday, September 29, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily. The installation is free, and open to the public, tickets are not required. A variety of additional lectures, classes, and campus forums will also take place as a part of this event, including a panel lecture and discussion at the Forestry Friday Forum in the Forestry Building, on Friday September 25th, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

Student Commission Meetings

Ever notice something about Michigan Tech that could be improved? Have you had a great idea that would have a positive effect on other students?

If yes, you are invited and encouraged to join us at the Student Commission meetings. We look to break down the barriers that impede student’s success, and to improve Michigan Tech’s campus environment.

You’ll get the chance to have your ideas heard by staff, faculty, university officials, and most importantly other students. We work together to act on your idea and make changes. Past accomplishments of the Student Commission include:

• Female Business Attire – Supported the initiative to sell female business attire at the Campus Bookstore.
• Library Services – Staff from the Library regularly attend meetings to request input about their services. If possible they implement ideas/suggestions.
• Transportation Services/Facilities Management Updates – Facilities Management is regularly invited to the Student Commission to provide updates, information, and answer any questions the group may have.
• Tobacco, Smoke, Vapor Free Campus – The tobacco free campus policy was instituted in the 2013-14. The policy was revised to include vapor in January 2015.
• Water Bottle Filling Stations – 18 buildings have water bottle filling stations.
• Shuttle Service – Collaboration with Facilities Management to improve shuttle service for students
• Student Commission Website – a website has been created http://www.mtu.edu/student-affairs/administration/vp/committees/student-commission/
• USG and GSG Chairs – The Vice Presidents from USG and GSG will co-chair meetings with the Vice President for Student Affairs
• Services in Dining Halls – Addressed and resolved issues of services available in dining halls

New Zealand Earth and Environmental Study Abroad Info Session

On Monday, September 14 from 5PM-6PM in the MUB Ballroom A2, Pavlis Honors Institute will host a New Zealand Earth and Environmental Study Abroad Info Session.

Frontiers Abroad offers field and research intensive study abroad programs for geology, biology, and environmental science students. Our programs combine a six-week field camp with a campus semester at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Central to the program is a research methods course which incorporates data collected during field camp into a semester research project.This course is offered only for Frontiers Abroad students. To learn more about the program please come to the informational session. Summer programs also available.

Free Bus Shuttles to K-Day

Today from Noon – 4:00 the annual K-Day event will take place at McLain State Park. Student Organizations will be showcasing what they have to offer so this is a great opportunity to join an org. or two! There will also be complimentary food and refreshments.

Free bus shuttles will be leaving every half hour from the MUB bus stop starting at 11:30 AM.

Parade of Nations Chicago Getaway Giveaway

PON is giving away a two night stay to Chicago for a family of 4! The package includes round trip airfare from CMX Airport (Hancock), hotel accommodations, and Chicago GOCards (3 attractions).

Swimming – It’s never to early – or to late – to learn to swim! Classes are available for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Group swim classes are available in six levels, ranging from introductory, fundamental, and stroke development to refinement and fitness swimming.

Skating – Lessons that teach the fundamentals by age group, preschool (3-5 years) and basic (ages 6 and up).
