Tickets are $25 if bought before the event, or $30 at the door. Cash and card will be accepted at the door.

Each ticket includes dinner, a free raffle entry, and a Duck’s Unlimited Membership.

All proceeds go to wetland conservation projects around the US.

SHPE Presents: Gala Latina

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is presenting Gala Latina. Gala Latina is open to everyone in the Michigan Tech Community and will be held on April 16th from 6-9 PM in the MUB Ballroom. Our event will include food, music, and a free raffle.

LGBTQIA+ Equity Forum

Keweenaw Pride is hosting two forums for students to share their experiences at Michigan Tech as members of or allies to the LGBTQIA+ community. We encourage students to share both positive and negative experiences and there will be a designated time for students to offer suggestions on what could be done to improve the LGBTQIA+ experience on campus. The forums will be held on Thursday, April 7, and Friday, April 8, both starting at 7pm. Students are welcome to attend one or both events. If you plan to attend, please fill out the RSVP form so we know how many people to expect. Any students who would prefer to submit written responses or are unable to attend the forums are invited to share their experiences via a survey. We look forward to seeing you or reading your responses!

The Thanksgiving Play

How hard can it be to celebrate Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Month at the same time? Good intentions collide with absurd assumptions in FastHorse’s wickedly funny satire, as a troupe of teaching artists scrambles to create a show that somehow manages to celebrate both while avoiding any cultural missteps.

Each evening, dinner is served at 6:45 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Following the show, there will be a brief panel discussion. 
Shows will be performed over two weekends from Thursday, March 31 to Saturday, April 9.

The SENSE Enterprise (Strategic Education through Naval Systems Experiences) is looking for student perspectives on renewable energy and the blue economy! Society of Intellectual Sisters is presenting Bra Show 2022, Mardi Gras! The Bra Show is a fundraising event for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and we will be hosting our event on April 2nd from 7-9 PM in MUB Ballroom. Our event will include a runway show of fun bras that are designed and modeled by our community, there will be food and plenty to enjoy that evening, scan our QR code for more info about the show and donating!

2022 FIRST Robotics Competition Opportunities

The 2022 FIRST Robotics Competition, Kingsford District event is looking for volunteers! This event will be held at Kingsford High School on April 7-9.

For the event as a whole, there are many volunteer opportunities that are geared to a wide variety of experiences, interests, and availability for those looking to get involved in the FIRST community. More information about the FIRST program, in general, can be found at FIRST | For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (firstinspires.org).
In addition, below is the Recruitment Flyer. Judging will take place on the Friday and Saturday of the event (April 8-9; 7:30 am- 6pm). No previous experience or knowledge of robots is necessary as there are both technical and non-machine (e.g. Entrepreneurship, Team Spirit, etc.) awards.

Remedy Drive Counter-Human Trafficking Outreach Concert 

Looking for a good reason to take a study break? 

There isn’t a much better reason than a rock concert!

Come chill with Remedy Drive as they rock out and tell their stories of volunteering in counter-human trafficking. Donations and proceeds of the event go to other organizations in counter-human trafficking efforts. Hosted by Campus Crusade for Christ. Entry nis free to students with an MTU ID and $5 for community Members at the door.

This week and next the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts will be presenting a thought-provoking dinner theatre production of The Thanksgiving Play.

Fraternity & Sorority Life Presents… Seize the Awkward

The words “I’m fine” are used in many contexts, but when it comes to our mental health, are we truly “fine” all the time? Talking to others about how you are really doing should not be awkward and together as a community, we can help make that happen. The national campaign “Seize the Awkward” is coming back to campus for the second year in a row huskies! This campaign focuses on how mental health can be extremely hard to speak about candidly: so let’s change that together.

On Wednesday, March 23th, our Awkward Art Night will be held from 7:00- 9:00 PM in MUB Ballroom A. Join us as we get creative and bring awareness to mental health and help to destigmatize those conversations surrounding it. All art supplies will be provided, please feel free to also bring your own. 

Thursday, March 24th, the Walk Out of Darkness will be held at the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena from 7:00- 9:00 PM. This walk is meant to help to make those conversations about mental health a little less awkward, and support those who may be struggling by giving them a safe space. Whether you’re walking for yourself, a loved one, or a friend; you’re not alone in your journey. Campus and community resources will also be available at this walk for students to engage with.

Talking about our mental health should not be awkward. Let’s come together and show our faculty, peers, friends, and family who may be struggling that we are in their corner and support them every step of their journey. For resources and to learn more about this campaign, please check out seizetheawkward.org!

Art Exhibit Scavenger Hunt!

As part of the World Water Day 2022 events, there is a scientific-art scavenger hunt. Find art pieces and answer questions from the Environmental Graphiti Exhibit throughout campus for a chance to win a $100 Amazon Gift Card!

Desi Beats – An Indian Holi Night 2022

Following the tradition of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the Indian Students’ Association at Michigan Tech heartily invites you in the celebration of the festival of colors, Holi. We will be hosting the “Desi Beats – An Indian Holi Night” on March 19, 2022 (Saturday) from 5:30 to 9:30 pm at the MUB Commons & MUB Ballroom. The Professional Development Committee at the Graduate Student Government and MTU’s Career Services are collaborating to bring you a three-part seminar dedicated to navigating careers for scientists. Panels will be made up of professionals across academia and industry within different departments and disciplines. These panels will feature brief speaker introductions, questions about their backgrounds, public Q&A, and breakout rooms for discipline-specific questions.

The Video Game Jazz Ensemble will kick off the festival on Friday with jazz covers of excellent video game music. Then the R&D Big Band will take the stage with a mix of music by Dizzy Gillespie, Fred Sturm, Horace Silver, Thad Jones and Herbie Hancock. The Workshop Brass Band will close the concert with energetic New Orleans-style jams.

Saturday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday’s show opens with the DK Jazz Fest 2022 Alumni Jazz Band, conducted by Adam Meckler and Mike Irish (director of jazz studies 1991-2018) and featuring Jazz Band alumni. Then, headliner Caroline Davis, saxophonist, takes the stage with the Jazz Lab Band. “We are incredibly lucky to have Caroline Davis in from New York City to be featured as our guest artist,” says Meckler. “Caroline is one of my favorite musicians today.” Together with the Jazz Lab Band, Davis — whose work has garnered praise from NPR, The New York Times, The Wire, DownBeat, and JazzTimes — will perform her original work and pieces by Thad Jones and Carla Bley. 

The festival will wrap with a post-show reception in the Rozsa Lobby.

Greek Life Presents… Seize the Awkward

The words “I’m fine” are used in many contexts, but when it comes to our mental health, are we truly “fine” all the time? Talking to others about how you are really doing should not be awkward and together as a community, we can help make that happen. The national campaign “Seize the Awkward” is coming back to campus for the second year in a row huskies! This campaign focuses on how mental health can be extremely hard to speak about candidly: so let’s change that together.

On Friday March 18th is National Awkward Moments Day and the kickoff of the Seize the Awkward campaign here at MTU! Join the Green Bandana Project in the library from 11:00 AM- 3:00 PM for resources about mental health. Help us to start a dialogue that is open and accepting of those awkward moments or conversations in life. 

On Wednesday March 23th, our Awkward Art Night will be held from 7:00- 9:00 PM in MUB Ballroom A. Join us as we get creative and bring awareness to mental health and help to destigmatize those conversations surrounding it. All art supplies will be provided, please feel free to also bring your own. 

Thursday March 24th, the Walk Out of Darkness will be held at the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena from 7:00- 9:00 PM. This walk is meant to help to make those conversations about mental health a little less awkward, and support those who may be struggling by giving them a safe space. Whether you’re walking for yourself, a loved one, or a friend; you’re not alone in your journey. Campus and community resources will also be available at this walk for students to engage with.

Talking about our mental health should not be awkward. There is still time to submit your nominations for the Student Leadership Awards! Nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership, Dean of Students Award for Possibilities, the new William and Josephine Balconi Community Service Award, and the Percy Julian Award are due by noon on Friday, March 4, 2022. Nominations for all other Student Leadership Awards are due by noon on Friday, March 18, 2022, which include a variety of awards to recognize the efforts and achievements of our Michigan Tech community.

The recipient of each award will be honored at the 28th Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2022, in the Memorial Union Ballroom.

This Week in Michigan Tech Recreation

With fun music and traditional aquatic fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together into a workout that’s mixed with cardio, body toning, and is most of all exhilarating. Land-based Zumba dance steps are more exaggerated and slower in the water.

Michigan Tech Recreation is hosting an indoor triathlon for MTU students and SDC members! Unlike a traditional triathlon, which covers fixed distances of swimming, biking, and running, indoor triathlons challenge competitors to race the greatest distance with a fixed time frame. Beginners and seasoned athletes are welcome to participate in the 10-minute swim, 15-minute bike, and 10-minute run! This event is FREE, but you must register in order to participate. Our March seminar is a rare opportunity to train with a world-class Aikido instructor in a small intimate setting. Gleason Shihan will focus on the internal applications of Aiki to one’s Aikido practice. • Dr. Matthew Songer earned a BS in Biological Sciences from MTU and an MD from University of Illinois, Chicago and is now an orthopedic spine surgeon and entrepreneur. He also earned a master of business administration from Northwestern University and taught at MTU and MSU.
• Dr. Elisa Piispa earned a PhD in Geophysics from MTU, was an assistant professor at Yachay Tech University, and now is a Research Specialist and Lab Manager at the Paleomagnetism Laboratory of Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland.

Graduate Research Colloquium

GSG is pleased to announce this year’s Graduate Research Colloquium (GRC) will be held on Tuesday, March 29, and Wednesday, March 30. GRC offers a unique opportunity for graduate students to showcase their research across the campus-wide community and work on their presentation skills for upcoming conferences. Students can give oral presentations, present posters, or do both. Due to the uncertainty of the ongoing pandemic restrictions, the event will be held in a pseudo-hybrid mode. Many conferences have been happening in the hybrid models due to the pandemic, so this would be an excellent opportunity to familiarize yourself with real-life experiences. Poster presentations will be held in person, and the oral presentations will be held virtually. Judges from a similar field will score all the presentations as the presenter. They will provide valuable insight and feedback on how the students can improve their presentations. 

Cash prizes are available for the top three places in both oral and poster presentations (1st – $300, 2nd – $200, and 3rd – $100). Registration is open now and it closes on Monday, February 28, at 11:59 PM. Click here to register today!

Poster Presentations will occur on Tuesday, March 29 in the MUB ballroom, 5-7 pm. GSG will cover the cost of printing posters for this year’s event so don’t let that prevent you from participating! The oral presentations will be held virtually on both days of the colloquium; they will be 12 minutes live talk (no pre-recorded video presentations) followed by a Q&A session.  The GRC event will be capped off with the annual GRC Awards Banquet. All participants and judges are invited to attend. The banquet will also be held in the hybrid mode so that people may join the awards ceremony virtually if they want. Reimagining the Possible – Discover Engineers Week

This week, we’re celebrating National Engineers Week (Feb. 20-26). Everyone’s invited to special events on campus sponsored by Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society student chapter at Michigan Tech.

Founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951, Eweek is celebrated each February around the time of George Washington’s birthday (February 22) because Washington is considered by many to be the first US engineer. Engineers create new possibilities all the time. From green buildings to fuel-efficient cars to life-saving vaccines, engineers work together to develop new technologies, products, and opportunities that change how we live for the better.

This Week in Michigan Tech Recreation…

Gates Tennis Center Announcement

The boilers that heat Gates Tennis Center as of yesterday are no longer functioning.  Our facilities team has been working hard to keep our building warm for the time being with emergency space heaters.  Starting Tuesday, February 22nd, we will have two large temporary units heating our building until a new boiler is delivered and installed.  It will cause a little extra noise than we are used to at Gates.

Court 4 will be out of commission for the time being where the units will be housed.  It can still be used for pickleball with a day in advance reservation, giving time to prepare the space.  As a reminder, the ball machine can now be used on any court because we have court divider nets.  There are outlets on the wall behind each of the courts.

Unfortunately, this also means that we will not have any hot water at Gates Tennis Center until we have a new boiler installed.  If you have a need for the showers, we can issue you access to the locker rooms at the SDC.

We apologize for the inconvenience over the course of the next couple of weeks. Please feel free to reach out to Kristin Yep (kvyep@mtu.edu) with any questions or concerns you may have.

Career Navigation for Scientists – Part II

The Professional Development Committee at the Graduate Student Government and MTU’s Career Services are collaborating to bring you a three part seminar dedicated to navigating careers for scientists. Panels will be made up of professionals across academia and industry within different departments and disciplines. These panels will feature brief speaker introductions, questions about their backgrounds, public Q&A, and breakout rooms for discipline specific questions.

The second panel on February 23rd, 2022 at 6 pm EST will feature MTU graduates from departments of forestry, biology, geology and mining, and chemistry. Our prestigious panelists include:

• Dr. Adam Coble earned his PhD in Forest Science from MTU and is now the Manager of Forest Health and Monitoring for the Oregon Department of Forestry.
• Dr. Kelsey Carter earned her PhD in Forest Science from MTU and now is Post-Doctoral Associate at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the Department of Energy.
• Dr. Rapsa Basu earned her PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from MTU and now is the Lead Scientist in Precision Immunotherapy at Humane Genomics.
• Dr. Aparupa Sengupta earned her MS in Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology and her PhD in Biological Sciences from MTU, worked as a Biosafety Officer at Rutgers University, and is now a BioSafety officer at UofC-MERCED.
• Dr. Matthew Songer earned a BS in Biological Sciences from MTU and an MD from University of Illinois, Chicago and is now an orthopedic spine surgeon and entrepreneur. He also earned a master of business administration from Northwestern University and taught at MTU and MSU.
• Dr. Elisa Piispa earned a PhD in Geophysics from MTU, was an assistant professor at Yachay Tech University, and now is a Research Specialist and Lab Manager at the Paleomagnetism Laboratory of Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland.

In 2015, Drew Lynch captured the hearts of America with his Golden Buzzer performance on Season 10 of America’s Got Talent. “The person I was before would probably never hangout with who I am today” is the statement that resonated most in capturing audiences across the country, as they fell in love with his charming wit and genuine vulnerability every week of the competition.Drew becoming a comedian was almost as unintentional as capturing America’s hearts. At the young age of 19, Drew moved to Los Angeles with aspirations of becoming an actor; a dream he had since he was a kid. A freak accident just a year into his acting career left Drew with a severe stutter and crushed his hopes of ever performing again.But his continued drive to become an entertainer forced him in a different direction, often reflecting on the “softball that humbly changed his life and gave him a career”. The relatability of Drew’s real-life situations in dealing with a stutter propelled him each week of the competition – advancing to the finals and ultimately landing second place on season 10 of America’s Got Talent. Drew attributes much of his success from his ability to be honest- genuinely facing the “elephant in the room” head on.

Stage Revue

Come support your favorite organizations as they put on a great show! Stage Revue is a performance given by multiple groups of Michigan Tech students participating in individual short sketches, with a focus on comedy. These sketches will all be based on the Winter Carnival Theme: “Come One Come All to our 100th Carnival,” celebrating both traditional carnival themes as well as the rich history of 100 years of Winter Carnival. Expect college-level humor, which may be unsuitable for younger children, but no overly obscene content.

Alternative Spring Break 2022

This year’s Alternative Break service site is One Heartland, a summer camp for youth living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, children experiencing housing instability, and LGBTQ+ young people. At camp, young people develop self-acceptance, life-long friendships, and the courage to face the world. Service tasks will include painting, furniture construction, bike tuning, and program preparation.

ASB 2022 will depart in a Michigan Tech 15-passenger van on the morning of Saturday, March 5th, and return the afternoon of Saturday, March 12th. The cost of the trip will be $250 per person which will cover all travel, food, and accommodations for the week. Participants will be required to attend a pre-trip meeting for both planning and educational purposes.

Interested in participating? This trip can accommodate up to nine students who will be selected through an application process. Apply today via our google form! Applications are due by midnight TONIGHT! An application is not a commitment to attend. If selected, students have the option to accept or deny their spot.

Center for Student Mental Health and Well-Being Presents…

Keep an eye out on the MTU Well Being socials and the student scoop for husky hobby events after winter carnival. We will be changing things up this semester and will be giving students more creative freedom along with some fun organized events.

Come out to the Tech Trails on Thursday, February 10th from 6-9pm during Winter Carnival to participate in the Bigfoot Glowshoe event! All are welcome to join in the fun!

SDH Open House

We would like to invite you to our upcoming Sustainability Open House on Thursday, February 10th from 4-7 pm over Winter Carnival weekend! Come learn about our sustainable systems including composting, hydroponics, aquaponics, a solar array, a beehive, energy-efficient appliances, a zero-waste household, and many more. In addition, all guests will receive free sustainable swag. 
The Sustainability Demonstration House is located at 21680 Woodland Rd, just down the road from East McNair. Parking is available at East McNair, Hillside, and Lot 10E. Masks will be required indoors.

Upcoming Seminar: Career Navigation for Scientists

The Professional Development Committee at the Graduate Student Government and MTU’s Career Services are collaborating to bring you a three part seminar dedicated to navigating careers for scientists. Panels will be made up of professionals across academia and industry within different departments and disciplines. These panels will feature brief speaker introductions, questions about their backgrounds, public Q&A, and breakout rooms for discipline specific questions.

The first panel on February 2nd, 2022 at 6 pm EST will feature MTU graduates from departments of Math, Physics, and Computing. Our prestigious panelists include:
Derek Dykens – graduated with a BS in computer system networking and telecommunications from MTU and is now a Global Retail Industry Strategist for Splunk

Dr. Alexandria Johnson – graduated with a BS in Physics from MTU and went on to Purdue to get her PhD in Atmospheric Science. She is now an Assistant professor at Purdue University.

Dr. Manish Kulkarni – graduated with a MS in Physics from MTU and went on to Case Western Reserve to get his PhD in Biomedical Engineering. He is now working as a Senior Staff Scientist at Diagnostic Solutions and Systems.

Dr. Ruihao Huang – graduated with a PhD in applied mathematics from MTU and is now working for the FDA as a pharmacometrics reviewer.

Husky Connect Mentor

Husky Connect Mentoring Program is looking for Mentors! Would you like to help new incoming students to adjust to new environments and to achieve their goals? Then you will be a great Husky Connect mentor! The Husky Connect Mentorship Program is looking for Huskies willing to give new students the value of their experiences. Each Connect Mentor is assigned one or two first-year students to begin interacting within the summer before the fall semester starts. Husky Connect Mentors receive compensation for the time they spend with their mentees. You can find more information and apply to be a Husky Connect mentor on our website. Applications close February 18th, 2022 at 5:00 pm. 

Husky Connect Open House

The Husky Connect Mentoring Program is looking for Huskies willing to give new students the value of their experiences.
