Music Lessons Offered

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts continues its music lessons program for students, faculty, staff and adult community members, for spring semester 2012. Lessons begin the week of Monday, Jan. 23, and are offered for guitar, piano, voice, and harp, and the woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.

Taught by qualified local professional musicians, twelve 45-minute lessons are offered throughout the semester on campus. This is a great way to enhance your musical talents.

Eric Whitacre Visits Houghton

World-renowned composer Eric Whitacre made a two-day stop at Houghton on October 20 and 21. He gave a free lecture at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts and directed the Michigan Tech Concert Choir, Superior Wind Symphony, and festival band and chorus.

He typically labels his style of directing as “compassionate fascism”. “When I get up on the stage, I am full of animation,” says Whitacre.

“It’s tremendously exciting and unheard of to have someone of such international notoriety come to a smaller place like Houghton,” Superior Wind Symphony director Nicholas Enz comments.

Choral director Jared Anderson says the chance to work with Whitacre is a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity. “He brings deep musical sensitivities, as well as a very encouraging manner to all of the groups that he works with.”

While at Michigan Tech, Eric Whitacre was sunshined by members of the MTU Huskies Pep Band.

The event was sponsored in part by the Mark Eugene Howard Endowment.

Varsity Singers Alums have a Reunion

Former members and alumni of Michigan Tech’s Varsity Singers/Jazz Singers gathered as part of the Michigan Technological University 2011 Alumni Reunion August 4-6. Stephen Brown and Lisa Pekrul Lange are spearheaded the plan, working with retired director Milton Olsson, and with Brenda Rudiger and her Michigan Tech Alumni Relations staff. Together, they compiled a not-quite-complete list of names of past Singers, but the list keeps expanding as word about spread. Contact Doc at miolsson@mtu.edu to update your contact info and to advise about other Singers that you know. So far, there are over 175 names on the list.
