Ron and Linda Staley Establish New Engineering Management Scholarship

The School of Business and Economics is pleased to announce that Ron & Linda Staley have established a new engineering management scholarship for incoming students. This endowed scholarship will recognize an outstanding first-year student in the engineering management major.

2017 has been a big year for Ron’s involvement with the School of Business and Economics. He was inducted into the Academy of Business which recognizes outstanding leaders in business and civic affairs, as well as those who have contributed significantly to the growth and development of the School of Business and Economics. He also joined our new Engineering and Supply Chain Management Industry Advisory Board.

Ronald Staley Final Crop -20170611 Staley has been with The Christman Company for 33 years and is currently leading the reestablishment of a new construction management and general contracting office in the City of Detroit. He founded Christman’s Historic Preservation Group in 1992 providing construction services for high profile national historic landmarks across the US and foreign countries. Ron earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Industrial Management) and Associate of Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology from Michigan Technological University. He is on the Board of Directors of The Christman Company and multiple non-profit boards and honored as a Fellow in the Association for Preservation Technology International and Honorary Affiliate of the Michigan Chapter American Institute of Architects.

Ron and Linda live in Brighton, Michigan and have two married children and two grandchildren.

Lecture by Dr. Paul Nelson

Dr. Paul Nelson gave a lecture on Thursday, November 16 entitled “The Current State of Competition in the United States” organized by the Economics Club with the support of the SBE. More than 100 people were in attendance including students, faculty, and members of the local community. Dr. Nelson’s lecture described the rise of oligopolies over the last few decades and how innovation is pretty much the main hope to disrupt them.

Accounting Club Visits Appleton

On October 26 and 27, Kappa Sigma Iota (SKI accounting club) visited Appleton, Wisconsin to experience some diverse businesses in actions.

Their visits began in Iron Mountain at CCI Systems with a plant tour and a meeting with their Shared Service team (accounting, AR, AP, Payroll, Business Analysts, Technical Communication, Compliance, and Risk Management).

Next, they set off Schenck CPA Firm where they met with staff from Tax, Audit, and Advisory services. Here students were able to talk with the individual staff from each department.

On Friday, students got a plant tour at Kohler and had the opportunity to meet with accounting staff before having lunch in the Kohler village. Last but certainly not least, KSI toured Lambeau Field where they took a tour of the Green Bay Packers’ stadium and business operations.

Before heading home, the club went to The Escape Room for a team building activity.

KSI is already beginning to prepare for their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) which will take place in February. Through this initiative students in the accounting club assist community members and area students with completing tax returns.

Baltus Named Captain of Hockey Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech head hockey coach Joe Shawhan has named Brent Baltus the captain of the 2017-18 Huskies. Joel L’Esperance, Dylan Steman, Jake Lucchini, and Mitch Reinke will serve as alternate captains.

“These young men understand the expectations on the ice, in the community, and in the classroom placed upon them by our staff,” First-year head coach Joe Shawhan said. “Brent was a part of the class that reestablished the Michigan Tech hockey tradition. He leads with quiet confidence and has the total support of the locker room.

“The alternates are all individuals who show up to the rink everyday with a positive attitude. They support their teammates and lead by example on and off the ice.”

Baltus, a senior forward from Nanaimo, British Columbia, was an alternate captain last year. He played in 14 games, scoring two goals and adding two assists before a season-ending injury. He enters his final year two games shy of 100 for his career and has 43 career points on 18 goals and 25 assists. Baltus is a three-time WCHA All-Academic Team member and two-time WCHA Scholar Athlete.

L’Esperance leads the team in career games played (108) and points (34g-37A=71). He led last year’s squad with 28 points on 11 goals and 17 assists, receiving the Gary Crosby Memorial Award as the team’s top scorer. The senior forward from Brighton, Michigan attended the Anaheim Ducks Development Camp in June 2016 and has 14 multi point games in his career.

Steman has played in 74 games over his first three seasons, tallying 38 points on 16 goals and 22 assists. He is a two-time WCHA All-Academic Team selection and was a WCHA Scholar Athlete last year. The senior forward is a two-time recipient of the John MacInnes Slide Rule Award after having the best GPA on the team with his 4.0 in mechanical engineering. The native of Hanover, Minnesota was named the top freshman student-athlete at Tech after his freshman year, receiving the Terry Wilson Award.

Lucchini has 39 points in 82 career games, tallying 22 points on 11 goals and 11 assists last year. The sophomore forward has never missed a game in his Tech career and was ranked ninth in the country in game-winning goals (5) in 2016-17. The native of Trail, British Columbia was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team after his freshman year and has twice attended the Edmonton Oilers Development Camp.

Reinke was a WCHA All-Rookie Team selection after his freshman season last year. He appeared in 41 games and was fifth in the WCHA in power play points (14) and seventh in WCHA freshmen scoring (6g-14a=20). The defenseman from Stillwater, Minnesota attended the Nashville Predators Development Camp in June 2016 and the Calgary Flames Development Camp in July 2017.
