Internship Opportunity

BNI Coal is now accepting applications for the following position in Center, North Dakota: Civil/Mining Engineering Intern.

Learning Opportunities:
This is a great opportunity to obtain experience in mine engineering and learn how engineers support the daily operations, design civil support structures and develop the long and short range mine plan.  This internship will gain experience in surveying using GPS and drones, drilling and blasting operations, mine production tracking of draglines and truck shovel fleets.  The candidate will provide field engineering support for the reclamation crews and develop drawings to be submitted to state regulators demonstrating compliance with BNI’s mining permit.   

Responsibilities:

  • BNI is searching for an energetic individual with a desire and a capacity to learn about the technologies and processes involved in the operation of a surface coal mine.  The successful candidate will assist the mine’s engineers and surveyors in the day to day support of mining operations.  Dependent on projects and need to support mining operations, responsibilities may include:
    • Surveying related activities using drones and GPS equipment
    • Field and design support for projects relating to mine development such as roads, ponds, diversions and other reclamation activities
    • Field verification of production
    • Assisting engineers and surveyors with daily job duties

Minimum Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled as a sophomore or higher in an undergraduate, accredited engineering program with a GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • Demonstrate safe work behaviors around all mine operations
  • Eligible to work in the United States, possess a valid driver’s license
  • Pass a background check and drug screen
  • Strong work ethic and time management skills

Summer Internship Opportunity in Alaska

Coeur Alaska, Inc., a subsidiary of Coeur Mining, one of the world’s leading primary silver companies and a significant gold producer, is seeking a Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineer or Engineering Technology Intern for its Kensington underground gold mine.The Kensington mine and associated milling facilities are located within the Berners Bay Mining District on the east side of Lynn Canal about 45 miles north-northwest of Juneau, Alaska.

Requirements:

The summer engineering intern will be responsible for projects underground, within the milling and water treatment operations, and on surface infrastructure; they will report directly to the engineering team. They will be expected to create solutions to existing challenges underground and on the surface to improve operational safety, environmental performance, and increase overall productivity of the mining and milling operations. The summer intern will be expected to manage all aspects of their project including: budget, scope, design verification, modeling, part procurement, and working with craftsmen to implement their project. 

Basic Qualifications:

Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering B.S. or Engineering Technology degree (ME, EE, CE, MET, EET)

Experience with CAD (NX, AutoCAD, Solidworks, or similar)

Project and teamwork experience

Ability to work safely and promote a safety mindset through design and action

Ability to work both independently and with a multidisciplinary team (engineers, miners, mechanics, electricians, geologists, safety coordinators, etc.)

Heavy industry or construction site work experience a plus

Team leadership experience a plus

Prefered Qualifications:

Mechanical: Experience with 3D modeling, drafting, designing for fabrication of metal structures, experience working with pumping and piping systems. Completed Coursework: Fluid Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials, Dynamics, Controls, Energy Lab

Electrical: Experience with low voltage distribution systems, ECAD, Industrial controls, PLCs, motor drives, instrumentation. Completed Coursework: Controls, Power Systems, Circuits, Electronics/Power Electronics,

Civil: Experience with concrete design, slab, embedment, water management, hydrology,

Project Management: Experience with project management: Budgeting, Scoping, timelines, resource management.
