Ten members of the Michigan Tech chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will spend their spring break in Detroit, working to inspire younger students to explore engineering as a career option. For eight of them, it’s a trip home, since they attended Detroit schools. The other two students are from Africa.

Michigan Technological University recently received a $100,000 gift from the General Motors Foundation, a long-time University supporter.
Forty middle and high school girls and their parents attended Michigan’s Tech’s first Parent-Daughter Engineering Exploration Day on February 23. The event was organized by the Michigan Tech Center for Science & Environmental Outreach and funded by the College of Engineering, Department of Engineering
Michigan Tech Engineers Week was celebrated February 16-23. Shown below are a few of the many events and happenings. The week included the 2013 Career Fair with a record turnout of recruiters, all this in a week that included a major blizzard and the university being closed a day and a half.
“I went out for an ice cream cone,” Mayra Sanchez Gonzalez says, of a routine journey in her native city of Merida, Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula. “I noticed this man asking directions in English, and the store clerk couldn’t help him.”

College of Engineering Dean Bill Worek and faculty including Professor Linda Ott (CS) and Department Chair Dan Fuhrmann (ECE), are in Silicon Valley in northern California this week for meetings with major high-tech companies, Michigan Tech alumni and students on Tech’s 3rd annual Spring Break Experience. Dean Worek will lead a panel on Thursday, March 14, at Brocade Communications, alumnus Dave House’s company.
Brocade is sponsoring the spring break trip for 15 students from across campus, organized by the School of Business and Economics. Their itinerary includes visits to Google, Cisco, Kyocera and Tesla, in addition to Brocade. The goal of the trip is to learn about technology, business, career paths and the work ethic of Silicon Valley.
Brocade is also sponsoring an alumni event on Thursday evening.
