Spring semester is over, but winter rules are still in effect! Here’s a glimpse back to the first tee at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge Golf Course in the 1930s. Did you have a favorite place to hit the links in the Copper Country? Let us know in the comments.
Enjoyed playing Portage Lake GC many times, 1958 and 59, as well as a couple of times in the 80’s. Especially the 18th hole (I think) that has the big Oak tree in the middle of the fairway.
I remember the 1958 Memorial Day long weekend playing Portage late in the day on Thursday with Bayrd Berger (class of 58). Going home back to the Delt Sig house, we stopped for a couple of beers and thought, why stay in Houghton for the weekend? We decided to hitch hike home, which we did arriving in Detroit Friday about 4 in the afternoon.
An early Saturday morning 9 holes at the Tech Course followed by a Pickled Eggs and Beer breakfast at the 19th Hole. Great memories of my Summer School term at Tech.
June 1973. Decided to golf the Keweenaw Lodge GC as most of the guys were graduating. Since they had yet to spray for bugs we only made it for 3 holes before running back to the cars to avoid being eaten alive by mosquitos.
I had been back since and remember golfing in mid July and wearing a sweatshirt, since it was 50 degrees!!
