As the deadline to complete a degree in summer 2012 approaches (theses and dissertations must be submitted by 4pm on August 24th, all other paperwork for all degrees and certificates must be complete by 4pm on August 31st), this essay on why deadlines matter offers some timely advice to all academics.
Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program
The
Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of
scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to
undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These
$25,000 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show
potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the
history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere
in the world. This highly competitive program aims to identify the most
talented researchers conducting dissertation research related to
education.

Nominations are now open for the 2023 Council of Graduate Schools (CGS)/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award. Please submit nominations to the Graduate School no later than 4pm, June 8, 2023, following our online instructions. This year, nominations are being accepted from dissertations in the fields of:
- Biological and Life Sciences
- Humanities and Fine Arts
Michigan Tech may nominate one student in each field. PhD students who have completed all of their degree requirements between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2023, are eligible. The fields of competition for 2024 will be Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Engineering; and Social Sciences.
Nominations must be delivered to Debra Charlesworth in the Graduate School no later than 4 p.m. on June 8, 2023; e-mail nominations to gradschool@mtu.edu are preferred. Contact Debra Charlesworth (gradschool@mtu.edu) if you have any questions about the competition.
The University is closed on Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th. When the University is closed, the “two week” rule for submitting drafts is relaxed to the next available business day. The Graduate School does not expect students to submit drafts to the committee or the Graduate School when the University is closed (but the Pre-defense form will still calculate these dates as the “due” dates).
- Students scheduling a defense on December 12th or 13th may submit the draft no later than 4pm on Monday, December 2nd.
- Of course, submitting earlier is always fine.
Additionally, the University is scheduling campus wide home directory maintenance from Thursday Nov. 28, 7 p.m., through Sunday Dec. 1, 11 p.m. During this time:
- No one will be able to use a campus computer (like one in the Library, or an office)
- No one will be able to access their campus home directory or the Multidrive
- Everyone will be able to use the wireless network on campus with a personal laptop
- Everyone will be able to log into Canvas or other campus sites (like MyMichiganTech.mtu.edu)

Learn how EndNote can help you easily create and manage bibliographic information and incorporate references into your writing. EndNote also offers a relatively easy way for faculty to upload citations into Digital Measures.
The “EndNote Basic” workshop will be from 1:05 to 2:15 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 26). During the session, we will cover how to create and build an EndNote “library,” add full-text documents and best practices for organizing your references. The workshop will be held in Library 242 and registration is required. Register for EndNote Basic.
The workshop “EndNote Cite While You Write” is from 2:15 to 3 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 26). Learn how to incorporate your EndNote library citations into a Microsft Word document in the particular style your manuscript requires. Attendees will also learn how to locate and import specialized output styles. Attending EndNote Basic, or prior knowledge of building and managing an EndNote library, is recommended.
This workshop is a continuation of EndNote Basic and will be held in Library 242 as well. Registration is required.

Proposals are now being accepted for the 2011-2012 Kauffman Dissertation Fellowship Program. View the full Request for Proposals for details and to submit your dissertation proposal. All proposals must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, September 14, 2011.
The Kauffman Dissertation Fellowship Program is an annual competitive program that awards up to fifteen Dissertation Fellowship grants of $20,000 each to Ph.D., D.B.A., or other doctoral students at accredited U.S. universities to support dissertations in the area of entrepreneurship.
When the built in styles don’t meet your needs for formatting paragraphs in Word, you will need to create your own styles. In this example, I will create a style for my paragraphs that contain equations.
The library is hosting an EndNote workshop Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Library 242.
Use EndNote software to manage your citations and save time. In this session, you will learn how to add references to an EndNote library, import references from databases and PDFs, organize your citations and use the Cite While You Write tool to incorporate references into Microsoft Word.
No prior knowledge of EndNote is required for this workshop.

Styles in Word are used to format text consistently throughout your document. Each paragraph may have a single style applied to it. For each paragraph, styles define the:
- Appearance of the text (bold, bulleted, size, font, etc.)
- Behavior of the paragraph (does it stay with the next paragraph? Have a page break before it?)
- Structure of the document (is this a heading meant for the table of contents?)
Styles are found on the Home tab of Word, in the Styles section (boxed in the figure below).
Graduate students are encouraged to enroll in Is It Original? Copyright and Patents for Graduate Students, funded by the National Science Foundation.
Program Basics:
This program offers busy graduate students a unique opportunity to build an understanding of intellectual property that will complement their studies, research, and instructional goals. Students can:
- Participate in a non-credit (no-cost), five-week program (July 18 – August 15) that is guided by Michigan Tech copyright and patent experts.
- Learn with peers in online environments, during Monday/Thursday weekly meetings with campus experts and guest speakers to develop a broad understanding of copyright and patent fundamentals in the context of academic research and publishing.
- Engage in guided team activities to analyze IP case scenarios relevant to graduate studies and to share your informed analysis with others.
Program Benefits:
Students will gain a competitive edge for their graduate studies and with future employers. They will explore the beneficial balance of IP law that supports the continuous advancement of knowledge by protecting, rewarding, and encouraging originality in STEM research. On successful program completion, they will receive a certificate of training in intellectual property. We’ve worked on this program for several terms taking into account feedback from graduate student attendees.
