Registration Now Open for Michigan Tech Aquatics Fall Programming

Huskies Group Swim Lessons

Huskies Group Swim Lessons are now open for registration! American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-4 are being offered at the SDC Pool on Saturday mornings beginning October 17. Social distancing will be maintained during classes and instructors will remain on the pool deck. A parent is required to be in the water with participants in levels 1 and 2.

Cost $60 per participant (discount available for current SDC members!)

Junior Huskies Swim Clinic

Junior Huskies Swim Clinic provides additional attention and competitive guidance to proficient swimmers ages 6-17 who are looking to improve their swimming skills and fitness levels. Participants must be able to swim unassisted for at least 25 yards, tread water for at least 1 minute and have swimming knowledge and ability equivalent to Level 5 of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program or higher.

Days/Times

Adult Huskies Swim Clinic

Adult Huskies Swim Clinic provides additional attention and competitive guidance to swimmers ages 18 and up who are looking to improve their swimming skills and fitness levels in a group setting. Each session is programmed with warm-up, skill work, and variations of a workout for the beginner, intermediate and advanced swimmer. Participants will be provided coaching and guidance to meet their individual swimming goals!

Days/Times

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7-7:50pm

Session 1: October 13th, 15th,20th, 22nd (REVISED – Due to the fluidity of the situation, we will be issuing refunds closer to the session start date.)

Session 2: October 27th, 29th, November3rd, 5th, 10th, 12th

The COVID-19 Visitor Symptom Tracking Form is required to be completed by all participants and guardians before every class session. Participants are asked to arrive at the pool already changed into their bathing suits. Locker rooms will only be available after class sessions. Masks are required on the pool deck but not permitted in the water while swimming. Masks are also required in the locker room except for showering. Space will be provided for personal items on the pool deck. Class size is limited and based off of social distancing.

Gates Tennis Center Opens to Current Students & Members on Aug 31

The Michigan Tech Gates Tennis Center will open to current students and Gates members on Monday, August 31. The facility is implementing an enhanced cleaning schedule based on guidelines from the CDC and recreation facility standards.

To ensure the health and safety of users the facility is moving to a block schedule. The new schedule will run for the entirety of the fall semester (Aug. 31–Dec. 20). Users can make reservations online or by calling the front desk at 906-487-2774. To request access to the online reservation system for booking court times on your own, please email gates@mtu.edu.

Gates Tennis Center Health and Safety Measures

After much research on the best practices for reopening tennis facilities, the below are some, but not limited to, health and safety measures and guidelines that are taking place at the Gates Tennis Center:

  • All members and rentals must fill out the COVID-19 Visitor Symptom Tracking Form before arriving.
  • All faculty/staff/students must fill out the COVID-19 Daily Symptom Tracking Form before arriving.
  • Block scheduling includes closing for 30 minutes in between sessions to clean and sanitize all areas and frequent touchpoints.
  • All front desk attendants will be wearing a mask.
  • A mask is required when entering the building until you reach the tennis courts.
  • The flow of traffic will be marked off. You will always enter and exit through the right side.
  • The lobby area lounge will remain closed and furniture will be used as a barrier between both sides.
  • The bleachers will be marked off with spots six feet apart so you can place your belongings there or sit.
  • There will be extra wipes and hand sanitizer out if you feel more comfortable taking the extra precautions.
  • Wash your hands before and after activity.
  • Please refrain from touching your face during activity.
  • If you need to move the curtains on the court to retrieve a ball that has rolled under, please use your racket to avoid touching the curtains.
  • The court curtains will be cleaned each month.
  • Restrooms and Locker Rooms will go through daily cleaning.
  • We ask that you do not spend any unnecessary time at the tennis facility. If you are done with your match or hitting session, please exit in a timely manner.
  • The ball machine can be used if you are a member as it is included in your membership. It is currently not available for outside rental.
  • Tennis racquets will not be rented at this time, but pickleball equipment will be, as it can be sanitized.

  • SDC Expands Hours on August 31 for Students & Faculty/Staff Members

    Michigan Tech’s Student Development Complex (SDC) will expand its hours in the Fitness Center and Lap Pool to faculty/staff members as well as current students on Monday, August 31. The facility is implementing an enhanced cleaning schedule based on guidelines from the CDC and recreation facility standards.

    Future phases include opening up additional facilities (racquetball courts, multipurpose room, and climbing wall), welcoming back community members, and the reopening of HuskiesFit classes and Youth Programs. All questions can be sent to recreation@mtu.edu.

      • Face coverings are required throughout the fitness center, except while on the cardio machines which are separated by plexiglass (face coverings are required while lifting weights).
      • All spotters will need to wear a face-covering
      • All cardio machines will be available w/ plexiglass dividers between each
      • Weight machines are spaced 10 feet apart
      • Free weights, benches, squat racks, mats, balls, and tubing will be available
      • Patrons are required to wipe down equipment before and after each use and maintain a six-foot distance from others while in the fitness center

      • All large bags or belongings will need to be stored outside the fitness center.

A team of staff from Recreation has continually updated its reopening plan since the July 13 soft opening to students. The facility is implementing an enhanced cleaning schedule based on guidelines from the CDC and recreation facility standards.

    Requirements for Entry from August 17-30:

    Registration Open for American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification & Lifeguard Review Courses at the SDC Pool

    ARC Lifeguard Certification Course

    Earn your American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification in this 3-day intensive training course located at the Michigan Tech SDC Pool. The certification includes Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certifications and all training materials. All participants must be 15 years of age or older by the first date of the course (documentation required). Required water skills include the ability to swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes, and complete a timed event in which participants retrieve a 10 pound brick from a depth of 7-10 feet and swim 20 yards with the object. Online training prerequisite must be completed by the first day of classroom instruction. Instructor will contact class participants with online course information and directions. Class size is limited to 10 participants.

    Days/Times: August 7 – 2pm-6pm, August 8 – 8am-6pm, August 9 – 8am-5pm

    Cost: $110 per participant

    ARC Lifeguard Review Course

    Need to get re-certified? Sign up now for the Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Renewal Course. This 2-day course includes Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED re-certification. The instructor will contact the class with additional course information and directions. Participants must have a Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification that has expired no more than 30 days prior to the final day of the course. Class size is limited to 10 participants. CPR mask and whistle not included. Supply purchase is available through the ticket office. 

    Days/Times: August 13 – 8am-1pm, August 14 – 8am-1pm

    Cost: $55 per participant

  • SDC Closed Through April 30

    HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Student Development Complex, Gates Tennis Center, and Systems Control Nordic Waxing Center at the Recreation Trails are closed to student-athletes, students, and the public due to concerns over the COVID-19 health situation. University Images is also closed.

    These closures are in compliance with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order originally issued on Monday, March 23 and extended on April 9. The closures will continue through at least April 30.

    The Tech Trails will remain open to those with memberships. Under the University’s Stay at Home Protocol, Tech Trails users must maintain social distancing of at least six feet.

    UP Health System – Portage Rehab and Sports Medicine and Pharmacy will continue operating under regular hours.
