Earn your American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification in this 3-day intensive training course located at the SDC Pool. Certification includes Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certifications and all training materials. All participants must be 15 years of age or older by the first date of the course (documentation required). Required water skills include the ability to swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes, and complete a timed event in which participants retrieve a 10 pound brick from a depth of 7-10 feet and swim 20 yards with the object. Online training prerequisites must be completed by the first day of classroom instruction. The instructor will contact class participants with online course information and directions.

OAP Evening Snowshoe Hikes

Just because the sun sets early doesn’t mean you can’t get out and play! Sign up now for the OAP Evening Snowshoe Hikes and experience winter in the dark! Clear skies or cloudy, night snowshoeing is a ton of fun. We will visit a few different locations, choose to join us for as many as you want. Some locations will provide more elevation to snowshoe, Hungarian and Pilgrim Community Forest, and others will be a bit flatter terrain, Paavola Wetlands and McLain State Park. Snowshoes are provided, limited transportation available.

  • February 25 – McLain State Park (registration closes February 24)
  • March 4 – Pilgrim Community Forest (registration closes March 3)

Meet at the location unless using OAP transportation (meet at Tech Trails).

Open to all ages, no experience necessary. Dress appropriately for weather conditions. A parent must be present for participants under age 14 or anyone under 18 using OAP transportation.

General Public $10/session

Participants must have a current signed SDC waiver of liability, OAP release and concussion awareness form on file at the SDC Ticket Office prior to participation.

The COVID-19 Visitor Symptom Tracking Form is required to be completed before every session. Masks are required if using OAP transportation and on the trails if a six-foot distance cannot be maintained. There are no provisions for medical intolerance reasons or medical waivers. Class size is limited and based on social distancing.

    Youth Huskies Group Tennis Lessons

    Youth Huskies Group Tennis Lessons are being offered for ages 5-17 at Gates Tennis Center! Class times are based on age and skill level. Two spring sessions remain, with 2 class options/level each session. Sign up for both classes and double your fun! Class size is limited and based on social distancing. Masks are required at all times.

    Lesson participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment, but Gates can provide equipment to those who don’t have their own.

    Saturday clinic times are subject to change to Sunday based on Michigan Tech Varsity Team match schedule.

    Red Ball (ages 5–6) uses a modified court, balls, and racquets to make it more fun for this group to learn hand-eye coordination and start swinging! Tuesday 4:30-5:30pm, Saturday 8-9am.

    Orange Ball (ages 7-8) uses modified balls and racquets to make it more fun for this group to continue to develop their fundamentals and technique! Tuesday 5:30-6:30pm, Saturday 9-10am.

    Green Dot Ball (ages 9-10) uses modified balls that the USTA tournaments use to integrate technique into game play! Thursday 4:30-5:30pm, Saturday 10-11am.

    Yellow Ball (ages 11+) uses regular tennis equipment as we work through technique and match play! Thursday 5:30-7pm, Saturday 11am-12:30pm.

    Adult Huskies Tennis Lessons Session 2 Registration Open

    Adult Huskies Tennis Lessons are being offered for ages 17 and up who are looking to learn more about the game of tennis! Each class will include technique and games to learn and develop skills that will improve players’ workouts and match play. Class size is limited and based on social distancing. Masks required at all times.

    OAP Kayak Safety Clinics

    Are you dreaming of summer and those wonderful paddling months? We can’t get you out on the open water, but we can help you work on your skills in the pool! Sign up now for the OAP Kayak Safety Clinics and refine those skills to keep you safe on the water. We try to meet each participant at their level and encourage them to challenge themselves. We will cover topics including kayak re-entry, de-watering your kayak, and wet exits. Focus will be on practice and improving technique; the more you do it the better you will get! All equipment will be provided including PFD’s, kayaks, paddle, and paddle floats. Appropriate swimwear required. We will be in the water between 4-9 feet deep, with lifeguards on duty during the event.

    Log Rolling

    Looking for something new to stay active? Sign up now for the OAP Open Log Rolling and test your skills on the log! Instruction and materials provided. We will be in the water between 4-9 feet deep, with lifeguards on duty during the event. We try to meet each participant at their level and encourage them to challenge themselves. Most new rollers can pick up the basics in one 1-hour session, though many come back each week to practice! Focus will be on balance, foot movement, and core strength; the more you do it the better you will get!

    Open to ages 5 & up. No experience necessary. Must be able to swim at least 10 yards unassisted, come dressed in a swimsuit and bring a towel.

    February 9, 16, 23, March 2, 16, 23, 30, April 13, 20. Tuesdays, 8-10pm, at the SDC Pool. Free to Michigan Tech Students, SDC Members $5, General Public $10. Pre-registration required.

    Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) Course

    Saturday, February 13, 8am-5pm

    SDC Fitness Studio & SDC Shooting Range

    This is the course you must take to get your Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). This is the premier course in the state of Michigan. The Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) course covers what you need to know for carrying in open spaces. Not just what to do in your home, but what to do in the parking lot, in the alley, etc. We also add in things we teach our other courses that we feel you are going to need to know, doing our best to help prepare you to prevail in any encounter. Rental equipment available for an additional fee. Students will receive a copy of the course material on the day of class. No experience necessary. Class size is limited and based on social distancing.

    • Minimum age 20 years old
    • Individuals are responsible for supplying their own ammunition (100 rounds)
    • There will be a firearms proficience test and a written test that students have to pass to complete the course.
    • Students agree to comply with all commands issued on the range and in the classroom.

    Adult Huskies Swim Clinic

    Adult Huskies Swim Clinic provides additional attention and competitive guidance to swimmers ages 18 and older who are looking to improve their swimming skills and fitness levels in a group setting. Each session is programmed with warm-up, skill work, and variations of a workout for the beginner, intermediate and advanced swimmer. Participants will be provided coaching and guidance to meet their individual swimming goals!

    Session 2: February 9-25 (registration closes February 7)

    Cost $60

    Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7-7:50pm, at the SDC Pool.
