Arnold and Lafreniere Publish on Creating a Longitudinal Data-driven Model of Change over Time

Don Lafreniere (SS/GLRC) recently published the “Routledge Companion to Spatial History (Routledge, UK, 2018, 636 pp.), which he co-edited with Ian Gregory (Lancaster University, UK) and Don Debats (Flinders University, Australia).

Lafreniere also co-authored three chapters of the 28-chapter volume: “Introduction” (chapter 1), “Following Workers of the Industrial City across a Decade: Residential, Occupational, and Workplace Mobilities” (chapter 14), and “‘A city of the white race occupies its place’: Kanaka Row, Chinatown, and the Indian Quarter in Victorian Victoria” (chapter 15).

Re-Imagining the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture

Angie Carter recently published the co-written article, “Public Action for Public Science: Re-imagining the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture” in Capitalism Nature Socialism Vol. 0, Iss. 0, 2018 in a special ecofeminism edition. The article analyzes community based efforts to rebuild the Center after its defunding by the State legislature.

Solomon Publishes on Geographies of Energy

Professor Emeritus Barry D. Solomon (SS) recently published the “Handbook on the Geographies of Energy” (Edward Elgar, Cheltenham, UK and Northampton, MA, 2017, 576 pp.), which he co-edited with Kirby Calvert (University of Guelph, Canada).

Solomon also co-authored three chapters of the 37-chapter volume: Introduction (chapter 1), Geographical Dimensions of Wind Power (chapter 10), and Geography of Geothermal Energy Technologies (chapter 12).

L’Anse Area Solar Feasibility Study Released

Michigan Technological University students and the Upper Peninsula Solar Technical Assistance Team (UPSTART) presented the results of the community solar feasibility study to Village of L’Anse community members on Dec. 13. The project seeks to determine whether L’Anse residents are interested in community solar and how to best design a program that would be affordable and accessible.

Baird Publishes New Book- “Critical Theory and the Anthropology of Heritage Landscapes”

Melissa Baird’s new book, “Critical Theory and the Anthropology of Heritage Landscapes” was published by University Press of Florida.

This book explores the sociopolitical contexts of heritage landscapes and the many issues that emerge when different interest groups attempt to gain control over them. Based on career-spanning case studies undertaken by the author, this book looks at sites with deep indigenous histories. Melissa Baird pays special attention to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and the Burrup Peninsula along the Pilbara Coast in Australia, the Altai Mountains of northwestern Mongolia, and Prince William Sound in Alaska. For many communities, landscapes such as these have long been associated with cultural identity and memories of important and difficult events, as well as with political struggles related to nation-state boundaries, sovereignty, and knowledge claims.

Project GRACE featured on Copper Country Today

The GRACE GIS Intern Program was featured this past weekend on Copper Country Today radio show. Don Lafreniere along with two GRACE intern students discussed how local youth are using geospatial technologies to learn about what in their neighborhood impacts their health and well-being. The interns also completed a park quality mapping project for Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR) that is now being used for local recreational plan development. The student spend 6 weeks working with faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students in the Geospatial Research Facility.
