Donations Sought for Nepal Disaster

As you may have read in the news already, Nepal was struck by a devastating earthquake on Saturday. The latest report from the Home Ministry of Nepal states that over 6200 people were killed, over 10,000 were injured and over 130.033 houses have been completely destroyed. Casualties are expected to rise as rescue and search operations are still underway. It is very discomfiting for us, members of Nepalese Student Association at MTU, that we are unable to be with our loved ones back home at this hour of great tragedy. While there is so little we can do about it, we are determined to do all that we can to help provide relief to the affected people in Nepal. We have opened an account at gofundme.com so that we could put together some fund and relay the fund to relief efforts back home.

It would be really helpful if you could help us spread the word around. We have been doing what we can to do so.

Donation may be made at http://www.gofundme.com/symb5n4. Every penny counts!

The Tech Theatre presents The Producers, today through Saturday, at the Rozsa Center, 7:30 p.m. each night. If you’re a Mel Brooks fan, or just find his movies fun, you’ll enjoy Tech Theatre’s musical version of The Producers. Not many Broadway shows are adapted from a film. Usually, the process is reversed, Les Miserables and Into the Woods being recent examples where Broadway shows have been adapted for the silver screen.

While the show may not be appropriate for young children (mature language and situations), audiences are in for a treat. Prepare yourselves for a hilarious chorus of tap-dancing old ladies, an unthinkable revue of dancing Nazi storm troopers, and the show-stopping musical number, “Keep It Gay”!

Tickets are $19 for adults, $6 for youth (17 and under), and free for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. To purchase tickets, call 7-2073, go online at rozsa.mtu.edu or visit Ticketing Operations at the SDC.

11. Student Hockey Game Attendance – Marketing Research (MKT 3600) Survey

Throughout this semester, Marketing Research (MKT3600), a comprehensive group project has been developing under the direction of professor Junhong Min.

As you are probably well aware of, one of the many incentives of the Experience Tech tuition fee is that it provides students with the opportunity to attain a discounted or free admission to Michigan Tech home hockey games. This works by providing free entrance to the first 750 students to arrive at a game and thereafter charging a reduced price of $5.

Though this program has positively impacted overall student attendance in comparison to previous years, we’ve recognized substantial room for improvement; namely, in the area of filling all 750 free seats at a majority of the hockey games. Hence, the goal of our project is to identify why students are not taking advantage of the free seats and potential solutions that could be implemented to engage more of them to do so.

In order to collect the appropriate data for our project, we’ve carefully designed a questionnaire (link below), which should take less than 10 minutes to complete. We are hoping to collect a wide spread of student responses by distributing this survey among the entirety of the student body.

Mrs. Subra provides technical assistance to citizens, across the United States and some foreign countries, concerned with their environment by combining technical research and evaluation. This information is then presented to community members so that strategies may be developed to address their local struggles. She has just completed a seven year term as Vice-Chair of the Environmental Protection Agency National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology (NACEPT), a five year term on the National Advisory Committee of the U.S. Representative to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation and a six year term on the EPA National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC) where she served as a member of the Cumulative Risk and Impacts Working Group of the NEJAC Council, and chaired the NEJAC Gulf Coast Hurricanes Work Group.

Mrs. Subra holds degrees in Microbiology/Chemistry from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. She received the MacArthur Fellowship “Genius” Award from the MacArthur Foundation for helping ordinary citizens understand, cope with and combat environmental issues in their communities and was one of three finalist in the Environmental Category of the 2004 Volvo for Life Award. She was selected in 2011 as one of the ‘Lifetime Remarkable Woman’ and most recently won the 2011 Global Exchange, Human Rights Award for her ongoing work with the BP Oil Spill and the communities affected by it.
Jessica Koski is Ojibwe from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. Jessica is an alumna of Michigan Technological University where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences in 2009. After Michigan Tech, Jessica earned a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. At Yale, Jessica’s focal area was Social Ecology and Environmental Policy, and her research examined indigenous environmental justice issues and activism in the western Great Lakes region.

Jessica currently works for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community’s Natural Resources Department as Mining Technical Assistant. In this role, she is working to build the capacity of her tribal community to address mining in the Lake Superior basin and Upper Peninsula. From 2011-2014, Jessica also served on the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council’s Indigenous Peoples Working Group. In addition, Jessica has been engaged as a community activist on mining issues for about eight years which has included organizing regional forums, assisting grassroots efforts, raising concerns at corporate shareholder meetings abroad, and elevating indigenous rights issues to the United Nations.

The main event will be held March 19th, 4:30-6:45 pm in the MUB Ballroom B. There will also be a reception in the GLRC on March 18th at 5:30 pm, and Wilma will also be available earlier in the day for other meet and greets.
