Winter, Spring, and Everything In Between

We are at the mid-point of the semester, where the weather can’t decide if it’s winter or spring. Sunny days of melting snow lead into March snowstorms, so we must be ready for all contingencies. But that doesn’t stop the fun! This photo from March 8, 1914, from the Archives’ Brockway Photograph Collection, shows a family who took the time to snowshoe and have a snowy picnic with their dog on one of those unpredictable spring-or-winter days.

As you reflect on your favorite winter and spring outdoor activities from your time as a Husky, we’d love to hear your stories in the comments! And as campus transitions into a new season, consider helping today’s students make their own unforgettable memories. Michigan Tech’s 24-hour giving challenge, Give Back to the Pack, is coming up on April 8-9—join us in supporting the next generation of Huskies!

  1. A fond memory I have is driving down a snowy backroad of the Keweenaw in our little (cheap) Ford Escort ‘Wood Paneled’ Station Wagon. Do they even have ‘wood panel’ any more? Let’s hope not. But the memory was of looking out the side windows and the snow banks were such that you could not see over them! It was like driving down your own Bobsleigh shoot. No problem staying on the road…

  2. You can’t beat learning how to ski and getting college credit for doing so! I went from the beginner slopes to intermediate slopes and took intermediate ski class my Junior year. I took expert ski class my senior year. My last class Tuesday and Thursday at Tech during my Senior year was ski class, so I stayed at the hill after every class and skied until it was time for supper. You can’t beat skiing during the week, and on the weekend as well! Ripley is a great place to ski. Too bad the only lifts were a rope tow and T-bar back then (early 70s), so it was more difficult to get to the expert slopes than it is now. But at that age, it didn’t seem like a big problem.
