Fall Little Huskies Basketball League Registration now open

Michigan Tech men’s and women’s basketball is excited to offer two fall Little Huskies basketball leagues, and registration is now open.

For boys grades 3-6, the camp will take place October 11-14 with registration closing on October 7. Players will leave with fundamental basketball skills like ball-handling, shooting, team play, and defensive play. The camp is Monday-Thursday from 4-6 p.m. in the SDC Multipurpose Gym. For girls grades 2-5, camp is scheduled from September 11-October 2 on Saturdays 9-11 a.m. in the SDC Multipurpose Gym. Youngsters from all local school districts and skill levels are encouraged to participate and the cost is $50/person and $25/sibling. Both camps will provide an excellent opportunity to play basketball and learn from current Michigan Tech men’s and women’s basketball players, who will be coaches in the league.

Fall 2021 Adult Huskies Tennis Lessons

Adult Huskies Tennis Lessons are now being offered for ages 17 and up who are looking to improve their tennis games with a beginner class for those with little to no experience and an intermediate class for those more advanced! Each class will include technique and games to learn and develop skills that will improve players’ workouts and match play. Class size is limited. Drop-ins welcome subject to class capacity. Lesson participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment, but Gates can provide equipment to those who don’t have their own.

Session 1: August 30 – September 30, 2021
Registration closes August 29, 11:59pm. No class September 6.

Session 2: October 4 – November 4
Registration closes October 3, 11:59pm.

Session 3: November 8 – December 16
Registration closes November 7, 11:59pm. No class November 22, 23, 25.

Instructor approval only – Mondays, 6-7:30pm
Intermediate – Tuesdays, 6:30-7:30pm
Beginner/Learn to Play – Thursdays, 7:00-8:00pm

Drop-in rates are only available if the class has not reached capacity. Give the instructor 24 hours’ notice before the class time if you want to drop in.

Registration is now open for the Michigan Tech Little Huskies Volleyball Club. Coached by the Michigan Tech coaches and student-athletes, the club will feature a series of opportunities to learn and experience collegiate level volleyball right here in the U.P.

The club is open to all boys and girls interested in volleyball. Participants will receive free admission to all home matches with their club T-shirt and can sit in a special cheering section. Members will also participate in post-match clinics and autograph sessions with the 2021 Michigan Tech volleyball Huskies.

SDC, Gates Tennis Center, Tech Trails adjust facility guidelines

In keeping with recently updated university guidelines, the Michigan Tech Student Development Complex (SDC) and Gates Tennis Center are adjusting facility guidelines. Michigan Tech announced a move to Health and Safety Level Two effective Sunday, Aug 15, 2021.

At Health and Safety Level Two:

  • Face-to-face instruction.
  • Face coverings are required indoors* for vaccinated and unvaccinated, consistent with CDC recommendations.
  • Follow recommendations from your healthcare provider or the Health Department for testing.
  • Contact tracing is through the Health Department.
  • Employee presence on campus falls under normal operations.
  • Campus buildings operate as usual.
  • Common areas are open.
  • Group gathering sizes are consistent with current State rules.
  • Visitors are permitted.

*Face coverings are required upon entry regardless of vaccination status but may be removed during exercise/physical activity in the Student Development Complex and Gates Tennis Center. Please reference and adhere to all posted signage for specific arenas inside the Student Development Complex. 

We encourage all patrons to please continue frequent handwashing (especially before and after meals), hand sanitization, and receive a COVID-19 vaccination.

The SDC is open to Michigan Tech students, members, and action pass holders. General membership sales resumed on July 1, but day passes and action passes are not being sold at this time. Details regarding membership rates, open recreation schedules, facility rules, and requirements for entry can be found at MichiganTechRecreation.com. Fall semester building hours begin August 30 and go through December 16, with reduced hours during Thanksgiving break.

A variety of recreation programs and events will be open to the community and offered throughout the Fall semester. Schedules and registration details are continually being updated at MichiganTechRecreation.com. Options include, but are not limited to, Aquatics, HuskiesFit Group Fitness Classes, Sports Clinics and Lessons, the Outdoor Adventure Program, and the Shooting Range.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course August 27-29

Earn your American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification in this 3-day intensive training course located at the Michigan Tech SDC Pool. The certification includes Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certifications and all training materials. All participants must be 15 years of age or older by the first date of the course (documentation required). Required water skills include the ability to swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes, and complete a timed event in which participants retrieve a 10 pound brick from a depth of 7-10 feet and swim 20 yards with the object. Online training prerequisites must be completed by the first day of classroom instruction. The instructor will contact class participants with online course information and directions.

    Summer public skating at MacInnes Ice Arena

    Public Skating will be offered at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena this summer beginning May 16. The schedule is as follows:

    • May 16 – June 27, Sunday 3:00-4:50pm
    • July 2 – 30, Friday 5:00-6:50pm
    • August 8 – 29, Sunday 3:00-4:50pm

    Public Skating is free to MTU students, SDC members, and action pass holders. $5 daily passes are available at the SDC Ticket Office.
    A hockey or bicycle helmet and skates are also required. A small number of helmets are available for issue. Please note availability is not guaranteed. Skate rental not available.

    All participants must fill out the COVID-19 symptom tracking form prior to arrival. Face masks are required at all times.

    Come make a splash this summer in Huskies Group Swim Lessons! American Red Cross Preschool Aquatics levels are being offered at the SDC Pool for ages 4 to 5 years old. Social distancing will be maintained during classes. A parent is required to be in the water with each participant.

    Preschool Aquatics is designed to orient young preschoolers to the aquatic environment and to help them gain basic aquatic skills. In addition, participants start learning about how to be safe around water.

    Two-week session meets Monday-Friday, 9:00-9:40am

    Huskies Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-4 (ages 6-17 years) are based on skill, from beginners to those refining strokes learned in previous levels. A parent is required to be in the water with participants in levels 1 and 2.

    Meets Monday-Friday, 10-10:40am.

    The purpose of the course is to familiarize children with the water and teach swimming readiness skills. In addition, Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics provides safety information for parents and teaches parents techniques they can use to help orient their children to the water.

    Two week sessions meet Monday-Friday, 9:00-9:40am.
