Registration now for Fall 2014 Little Huskies Boys’ Basketball League!

Open to boys in Grades 3-8, Little Huskies Boys’ Basketball League will run October 6-9 from 4-6pm in the SDC Multi Purpose Gym. Cost to participate is $40/child ($20/additional sibling) and includes a Little Huskies t-shirt and free access to all home men’s basketball games (Little Huskies must wear their league t-shirt to get in free)!

Learn the fundamentals, improve your skills, and play the game. As part of the Michigan Tech Little Huskies Boys Basketball League, you get to learn from the pros and be a part of the action!

R.A.D. – Rape Aggression Defense Class Starts Tonight!

Rape Aggression Defense starts tonight, Tuesday, September 9! Master self-defense tactics and safety techniques through a comprehensive course designed specifically for women ages twelve and up. It begins with a focus on awareness, prevention, and risk reduction/avoidance, and progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-8pm, until October 2, in SDC Racquetball Court #5. Cost per 4-week session is $50 for general public, $30 for students.

R.A.D. is offered by Michigan Tech’s Department of Public Safety and Police Services through Community Programs, and the course is taught by Public Safety officers. The class combines both classroom instruction and hands on physical training.

Community Programs Instructors Needed!

Love fitness? We do too! Michigan Tech Community Programs is looking for group fitness instructors that are as passionate about health and fitness as we are. We offer a wide range of regularly scheduled programs, including high impact TRX, boot-camp and spinning conditioning classes to low impact yoga and youth programming. Community Programs hourly instructors are responsible for preparing and conducting 50-minute fitness classes, and for the maintenance and care of Michigan Tech fitness equipment and facilities. All instructors are required to be CPR/First Aid certified (certification provided) and must be 18 years of age or older. Hourly instructor compensation is calculated based on training, certifications, and years of experience.

All applicants are required to provide:

  • Current contact information, including copy of government issued ID, e-mail, phone number and home address.
  • Current resume, including all fitness and instructing experience
  • Copies of any/all fitness/instructor certifications
  • Proposed class description and class outline (upon request)
  • Applicants will be required to teach a sample class for the Recreation Director and current Community Programs instructors (upon request).

Women’s Basketball Little Huskies Begins Sept. 13!

WBBLHleague sliderHOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team will be hosting its Little Huskies basketball league for girls beginning Sept. 13. The league, which runs on Saturdays from 9-11 a.m., is for girls currently in grades three through eight and will be held in the multi-purpose gym in the Student Development Complex. Dates for the league are Sept. 13, 20 and 27 and Oct. 4 and 18.

The first half of each session will consist of basketball fundamentals and skills with the second half featuring games.

The cost of the league is $40 per person ($20 for each additional sibling), and all participants will receive a free T-shirt that will grant them free admission to all home basketball games. Participants will also play in halftime games at select Tech men’s basketball games.

Online registration is available. A completed registration form is also required for participation in the league and should accompany each child at the first session on Sept. 13.

Huskies Live Video Streaming Starts Tonight

Huskies Live Video Streaming Starts Tonight

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Huskies Live, the video streaming portal for Michigan Tech home athletic events, is open and ready for users to set up accounts for the 2014-15 season at HuskiesLive.mtu.edu. All Huskies home events in football, basketball, volleyball and soccer will be available through Huskies Live, with options to purchase single-event passes or season sport passes.

Michigan Tech hockey streams will not be on Huskies Live. Like last year, live video for hockey is part of a Western Collegiate Hockey Association-wide streaming package through AmericaOne.

Streams of Tech athletic events include a multi-camera setup with instant replay and graphics.

A total of 46 Michigan Tech athletic events will be streamed through Huskies Live in 2014-15. Home postseason events will be included free of charge in season packages.

Fans are encouraged to set up accounts and test technology in advance. Customer service is available between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Fridaynoon to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The first event is tonight’s volleyball match vs. Wis.-Parkside at 6:30 p.m.

Athletics & Recreation Fall Sports & Fitness Festival this Saturday, August 30!

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech Athletics and Recreation is hosting a Fall Sports and Fitness Festival at the Student Development Complex on Saturday, Aug. 30.  This interactive, three-hour event from 6-9 p.m. will showcase Tech’s facilities, athletic teams and programs for sports and fitness to incoming Michigan Tech students and the community.

All are welcome to attend this free event. There will be complimentary hot dogs, popcorn, coffee and pop served in the MacInnes Student Ice Arena along with other food items for purchase. There will also be plenty of giveaways.

Guests should come prepared to play. Interactive stations with Michigan Tech student-athletes will be set up in the MacInnes Student Ice Arena, SDC Gym, Multipurpose Gym and at Sherman Field and the Tech Trails. All of the SDC’s facilities including the pool and fitness center will be open and free to use for the evening. There will also be community program sessions for patrons to try.

“This is a great opportunity for people to come to our building, interact with our staff and student-athletes and experience new things,” said Tech’s associate athletic director for external relations Joel Isaacson. “We want students and community members finding something they enjoy and coming back all year.”

Both season and single-game tickets for all Tech sports will be on sale during the event. Fans can check out seats before they purchase tickets. Home openers for each sport are:Sept. 4 for volleyball, Sept. 5 for soccer, Sept. 20 for football, Oct. 31 for hockey, Nov. 15 for women’s basketball and Dec. 11 for men’s basketball.
