American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Blended Learning Course: Registration Closes Thursday, August 1

Earn your American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification August 14-18 at the Michigan Tech SDC Pool.

This intensive training course includes Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certifications and all training materials.

All participants must be 15 years of age or older by the first date of the course (documentation required). Required water skills include the ability to:

  • Swim 150 yards (using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, swimming on the back or side is not permitted, swim goggles are allowed), maintain a position on the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water with the legs, swim 50 yards (using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both). 
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (face may be in or out of the water, swim goggles are not permitted).
    • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
    • Exit the water without using the ladder or steps.

Online training prerequisites must be completed by the first day of classroom instruction. The instructor will contact class participants with online course information and directions. Class size is limited.

Registration is now open for summer Huskies Aquatics programs! We are excited to offer programs for both youth and adults from beginners to advanced participants with an extended variety of times.

WIBIT Wednesday at the SDC Pool

MTU students, SDC Access Pass holders (minimum one-month), and WIBIT Wednesday Pass holders come make a splash with our inflatable pool obstacle course called the WIBIT!

TODAY Wednesday, April 10, 5-8 pm — Step/Bridge/Cliff/Slope

Events will be held this spring for current MTU students, SDC Access Pass holders (minimum one-month), and WIBIT Wednesday Pass holders. Test your individual skills on the course or challenge a friend to a race across the obstacles. The course is set up in the deep water and requires users to be able to pass our swim test. See the WIBIT rules and swim test content on our website for more information.

There are many different pieces of the WIBIT and each event will have a featured combination. Potential featured pieces include:

  • The Step — This piece allows users to climb up onto the course.
  • The Base — Users must make their way across a horizontal surface. Be careful how fast you move, as it can get slippery!
  • The Cliff — Users must navigate either side of a slope using the handles and their balancing skills.
  • V-Connect — Users must use limited footing space to navigate across the horizontal structure.
  • The Bridge — Users must navigate up and over an arched structure without falling through.
  • The Slope — Users must climb up a six-foot wall that leads to a slide into the pool water below!

PADI Open Water SCUBA Course March 15-1

Registration for the next PADI Open Water SCUBA Course is now open.

The course is conducted over two weekends and includes:

  • Ten hours of academic instruction (some coursework to be completed independently),
  • Ten hours of confined water training (SDC Pool), and
  • Four certification dives in Lake Superior (Marquette).

Upon registration, students will be given all required reading material and paperwork to complete prior to the start of the course. Students must be 18 years old and be able to swim 200 yards comfortably.

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to all class sites, including the SDC and dive location in Marquette.

Course Dates and Times:

  • Friday, March 15 — 5-10 pm, SDC
  • Saturday, March 16 — 8 am – 10 pm, SDC
  • Sunday, March 17 — 8 am – 12 pm, SDC
  • Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, or Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21 — Open Dives in Marquette (exact location and time TBA)

Cost is $575 per person (includes all instruction, fees, and training materials). The deadline to register is February 29, 11:59 pm.

Spring 2024 Open Log Rolling

Open Log Rolling is set for Spring 2024!

January 16 – April 23, 2024 (no log rolling February 27)
Tuesdays, 8-10 pm in the SDC Lap Pool

Open to MTU Students and SDC Access Pass Holders (minimum 1-month) only.

Cost: FREE!

No experience is necessary. Most new rollers pick up the basics quickly, though for some it may take a little longer. The focus will be on balance, foot movement, and core strength; the more you do it, the better you will get! A basic demonstration of swimming proficiency will be required on the first day. Must be able to swim at least 10 yards unassisted.
