DoD Guidance on Medical Research

IMG_8369Dr. R. Keith Martin, Senior Science Advisor, Tunnell Government Services visited campus on Thursday, September 10 to discuss research programs and funding opportunities in the life and medical sciences within the Department of Defense.

Dr. Martin presented two sessions: “Understanding Military Medical Research Programs,” and “The Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium.” Both seminars were in the MUB Ballroom A-1.

Dr. R. Keith Martin has had a successful career as a researcher and senior leader in the area of medical and health science research and development. He has served in many leadership roles within the US Army and Department of Defense including Military Deputy to the Principal Assistant for Research and Technology at the Army’s R&D Headquarters, where he exercised executive oversight of the planning, management and execution of >$1.4B of annual R&D funding for medical programs.

Dr. Martin retired from military service as a full Colonel and now works for Tunnell Government Services as a senior science advisor to help connect researchers from academia and industry with the medical research programs supported by the Army and the Department of Defense.

In addition, Dr. Martin engaged in discussions on research programs and opportunities funded by the Department of Defense.

Nina Mahmoudian Receives a Young Investigator Program Award from Office of Naval Research

image123120-horizOnly 36 faculty across the US were invited to join the Young Investigator Program (YIP) from the Office of Naval Research this year; additionally, only a small percent of faculty receive the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Nina Mahmoudian, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics at Michigan Technological University, is one of a select few to receive both in the same year.

Minerick Named Associate Dean for Research and Innovation

image122968-horiz2Adrienne Minerick has been named the first associate dean for research and innovation in Michigan Tech’s College of Engineering. Dean of the College of Engineering Wayne Pennington said Minerick will coordinate faculty and staff engagement with each other and with agencies that fund research projects, ranging from single-investigator one-year projects to complex multi-disciplinary projects involving several institutions and spanning years.

This was the 8th Annual D80 Conference. The D80 Conference is a celebration of our efforts to solve issues that confront the world’s poorest 80%. The Michigan Tech campus hosts this annual conference in the fall every year to give a platform to the voices of university students serving communities-in-need both domestically and abroad. MTRI Research Featured at Michigan Tech

IMG_0430The staff of the Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI) in Ann Arbor was on campus on Friday, Sept. 19, to conduct a poster session in the Dow Atrium (sixth-floor campus entrance). MTRI scientists and engineers were also available to discuss projects, collaborations with Michigan Tech departments and staff, and areas of research interest. The session is intended to outline the institute’s current activities and to explore opportunities to develop new working relationships. Examples of research included: Signature Study for Vehicle-Animal Collision Avoidance, 3D Wireless Bridge Inspection, Wave-Ice sensor network, EPA Costal Wetland Mapping, Monitoring Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) in the Great Lakes, Characterization of Unpaved Road Condition Through the Use of Remote Sensing: Road Condition Data Collection and Analysis, Application of Geospatially Enabled Geographic Response Plans for Oil Spill Response in the Western Basin of Lake Erie and more. Seminar: Combined Heat and Power At Michigan State University Using Torrefied Biomass to Reduce Fossil Fuels and Green House Gas Emissions

Seminar: “Combined Heat and Power at Michigan State University Using Wood and Other Renewable Biofuels”
Speaker: Nate Verhanovitz, Performance Engineer, Power and Water Infrastructure Planning and Facilities, Michigan State University  

One way MSU plans to achieve its renewable resource goals is to decrease its dependence on coal through the combustion of wood, grasses, and agricultural residue at the T.B. Simon plant in East Lansing. The plant is one of the few operating facilities in North America to test burn torrefied biomass. This presentation will focus on the results and lessons learned from the first two co-firings of near-torrefied wood with coal in a pulverized coal boiler. The seminar took place in 402 Mechanical Engineering Engineering Mechanics Building on June 9, 2014.

Michigan Tech will be a supplier to MSU and the T.B. Simon power plant of torrefied biomass pellets produced at the pilot plant of Michigan Tech’s APS Labs. The pellets will be used in the next phase of biocoal test burns at the T.B. Simon power plant. The Michigan Tech connection in the biofuel research includes Dr. Ezra Bar Ziv (professor, ME‐EM), John Diebel (assistant director, Technical Commercialization) and Jordan Klinger (PhD candidate, ME‐EM). They were members of a team that was awarded the top team designation by the NSF Innovation Corps (I‐Corps), a new public–private partnership to help develop scientific and engineering discoveries into useful technologies. The program connects academic researchers with the technological, entrepreneurial, and business communities. Ezra Bar Ziv (ME-EM) has received a $50,000 research grant from NSF for “I-Corps: Feasibility of a Novel Concept to Produce Biocoal for Power and Enhanced Bio-Oil.”

Design Expo 2014 Awards

The Design Expo highlights hands-on, discovery-based learning at Michigan Tech. More than 600 students in Enterprise and Senior Design teams showcase their work and compete for awards. A panel of judges, made up of corporate representatives and Michigan Tech staff and faculty members, critique the projects.  

Many of them are sponsored by industry, which allows students to gain valuable experience through competition at the Expo, as well as direct exposure to real industrial problems. The fourteenth annual Expo is a combined effort of the College of Engineering and the Institute for Leadership and Innovation. The event was held in the J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library Third Floor exhibit area on Thursday April 17, 2014.

The Design Expo highlights the core foundations of a Michigan Tech education: experiential learning; teamwork; application of theory, design, and innovation; leadership and communication; and multidisciplinary solutions to problems. The Enterprise and Senior Design students showcasing their projects today have embraced these foundations. We take tremendous pride in their accomplishments
and hard work.

Michigan Tech’s innovative Enterprise Program enables interdisciplinary learning, leadership development, and team-based work. Teams of first- through fourth-year students from diverse disciplines operate much like real companies to develop products, processes, and services within their market space. Faculty advisors serve as coaches and mentors, with industry leaders playing a
supporting role as collaborators and clients.

Senior Design enables small teams of highly dedicated students to explore and solve real industry challenges throughout their senior year. Our program connects students and industry through openended projects, which enable teams to experience and follow the complete design process—from ideation to realization.

Patent and Trademark Center at Michigan Tech

A day-long orgram of special seminars was offered for university people to find the information to protect intellectual property. This free Seminar was for Inventors, Entrepreneurs, Educators and Legal Professionals featuring Speakers from the United States Patent & Trademark Office and Michigan Technological University.

Located in the Van Pelt and Opie Library, the PTRC will benefit University students, faculty, and staff as well as inventors and independent researchers from the surrounding communities. Services offered will include by-appointment individual patent and trademark searching help with trained librarians, access to robust patent-searching databases available only at PTRCs, patent and trademark searching workshops, and books and other helpful materials on the patent and/or trademark application process from beginning to end. Ellen Marks, University Librarian, emphasizes the importance of the PTRC’s services for individuals, groups and businesses located throughout the Upper Peninsula and Eastern Wisconsin — “everyone is welcome to use our services, uncommonly available in rural areas.”
