PADI Open Water SCUBA Course October 13-15

Registration for the next Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Open Water SCUBA Course opens tomorrow, Wednesday, September 13 at 8 a.m.!

The course is conducted over two weekends and includes:

  • Ten hours of academic instruction (some coursework to be completed independently),
  • Ten hours of confined water training (SDC Pool), and
  • Four certification dives in Lake Superior (Marquette).

Upon registration, students will be given all required reading material and paperwork to complete prior to the start of the course. Students must be 18 years old and be able to swim 200 yards comfortably.

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to all class sites, including the SDC and dive location in Marquette.

Course Dates and Times:

  • Friday, October 13 — 5-10 p.m., SDC
  • Saturday, October 14 — 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., SDC
  • Sunday, October 15 — 8 a.m. to noon, SDC
  • Saturday and Sunday, October 21-22, or Saturday and Sunday, October 28-29 — Open Dives in Marquette (exact location and time TBA)

Cost is $575 per person (includes all instruction, fees and training materials). The deadline to register is September 28, 11:59pm.

Fall MI Concealed Pistol License (CPL) Courses

Earn your MI Concealed Pistol License (CPL) through this one-day course brought to you by Michigan Tech Recreation, the SDC Shooting Range, and 906 Tactical. This is the course you must take to get your Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). This is the premier course in the state of Michigan. The Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) course covers what you need to carry a loaded weapon safely in open spaces. Rental equipment is available for an additional fee. Students will receive a copy of the course material on the day of class. No experience is necessary. Class size is limited.

Four dates to choose from. Registration opens January 18, 8:00am.

  • Minimum age 20 years old
  • Individuals are responsible for supplying their own ammunition (100 rounds).
  • There will be a firearms proficiency test and a written test that students will have to pass to complete the course.
  • Students agree to comply with all commands issued on the range and in the classroom.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Blended Learning Course

Register today for the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, a three-day intensive training course located at the Michigan Tech SDC Pool. The certification includes Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certifications and all training materials.

All participants must be 15 years of age or older by the first date of the course (documentation required). Required water skills include the ability to swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for two minutes and complete a timed event in which participants retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7-10 feet and swim 20 yards with the object.

Online training prerequisites must be completed by the first day of classroom instruction. The instructor will contact class participants with online course information and directions. Class size is limited.

Michigan Tech Rec Indoor Triathlon

You don’t have to win, you just have to TRI! Michigan Tech Recreation is hosting an indoor triathlon for MTU students and SDC Access Pass Holders (minimum 1-month)! Unlike a traditional triathlon, which covers fixed distances of swimming, biking, and running, indoor triathlons challenge competitors to race the greatest distance within a fixed time frame. Beginners and seasoned athletes are welcome to participate in the 10-minute swim, 15-minute bike, and 10-minute run! Transition time is provided between events. Event capacity is limited.

Spring 2023 Aikido Gleason Sensei Seminar

Experience a rare opportunity to train with world-class Aikido instructor, William Gleason, in the SDC Fitness Studio March 17-19! Gleason Shihan will focus on the internal applications of Aiki to one’s Aikido practice. We encourage all of our Aikido brothers and sisters to join us for the training.

Adult Huskies Swim Training provides additional attention and competitive guidance to swimmers ages 18 and older who are looking to improve their swimming skills and fitness levels in a group setting. Each session is programmed with a warm-up and variations of a workout for the beginner, intermediate and advanced swimmer. Participants will be provided coaching and guidance to meet their individual swimming goals!
