Winter Baja 2015 Update Results

IMG_5650640The 2015 Winter Baja was held Saturday, Feb. 21, near the Student Development Complex at Michigan Technological University.

The University of Iowa car #48 came in first place, followed by Northern Michigan University car #40 at 2nd Place and Ferris State University car #76 at 3rd Place. Other standings are listed below showing the place and laps completed. In the dynamic event University of Michigan Car #1 came in first followed by University of Iowa Car # 68 at 2nd and University of Michigan Car #161 at 3rd.

The event was held during the National Engineers Week at Michigan Tech. This year there were 33 off-road vehicles from 18 universities. The event is an informal, but competitive Winter Baja race held on a motocross-style track made out of snow.

The line up was at 1130 am and competition endurance race started at 12 Noon, and the action went till 4 pm.

Superior Ideas Challenges Enterprise Students to Help Fund Their Projects

Michigan Tech Enterprise program students are hard-working and innovative, but their creativity can be hindered by their spending limits. That’s where Superior Ideas comes in. Superior Ideas—Michigan Tech’s crowdfunding site—helps bring university research and public service projects to life. Superior Ideas established the Rekhi Funding Challenge, supported by alumnus and longtime donor Kanwal Rekhi, to help Enterprise teams gain funding for their projects.

exposimpleRegistration is now open for Design Expo, a showcase of senior design and Enterprise student projects, now in its 15th year. Registration closes on Friday, Feb. 6.

Human Resources highlights the Michigan Tech Enterprise program

The talent that manufacturing companies must find to fill the next
generation of skilled-manufacturing jobs will come from institutions such as Michigan Technological University, a Houghton, Mich.-based public research university with an enrollment of approximately 7,000 and one of the first academic institutions to join LM31, says Paul Sanders, an associate professor of materials science and engineering at MTU .

Meadows Appointed First Dean of Pavlis Honors College

14b57a7Lorelle Meadows has been appointed dean of the newly established Pavlis Honors College. She will start on August 1.

Meadows comes to Michigan Tech from the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor, where she served as assistant dean of academic programs in the College of Engineering. “She brings a wealth of experience in leadership and administrative roles, from first-year programs to broadly overarching programs that transcend departmental boundaries,” said Provost Max Seel. “She has an excellent vision how to bring together the various parts of this new entity.”  

Enterprise Students Target IT Solutions for Retailer

Where does a giant international retailer turn when it needs innovative IT support? Michigan Technological University, of course. Target Corporation, with international headquarters in Minneapolis, is the first retail firm to participate in Michigan Tech’s signature Enterprise program. In the Enterprise program, teams of students work with a business or industry sponsor on a real-world problem that the sponsor would like the students to help solve.

DENSO Underwrites Undergraduate Dynamometer Facility at Michigan Tech

image106605-horizThree of Michigan Tech’s Advanced Motorsports Enterprise teams are working together—literally—for the first time, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the DENSO North America Foundation. The funding is enabling the Formula SAE, Supermileage Systems and Clean Snowmobile teams to share remodeled engine-lab space in the Advanced Technology Development Complex (ATDC) on Sharon Avenue in Houghton.
