The Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows program is a competitive six week long summer leadership program that takes place just outside of Washington, D.C. at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. The program offers a small, select group of rising college juniors unparalleled opportunities in the nation’s capital and on the famous estate of the first President of the United States. The program is fully funded and offers a $3000 stipend plus room, board and transportation expenses. During your six week fellowship you will engage in dynamic leadership education curriculum, interact with nationally recognized corporate, government, and military leaders in the nation’s capital, and discover how to change the world through self-reflection, exciting experiential activities, and a community service-focused capstone project.

Info Session on the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)

The Research Development Office is hosting an overview session on the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) for eligible students. The session is at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13 in the Administration Building, room 404.

To be eligible for the NSF GRFP, students must:

•be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
•intend to pursue a research-based Master’s or Ph.D. program in an NSF-supported field
•be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited United States graduate institution, with a US campus, by fall 2018
•have completed no more than twelve months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent) as of August 1, 2017, or meet the criteria for the extenuating circumstance described in Section IV of the Program Solicitation.
•meet all other eligibility requirements as set forth in the current Program Solicitation

Award benefits:

•a three-year annual stipend of $34,000
•$12,000 cost of education allowance for the cost of tuition

The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship

Scoville Fellows work with one or more than two dozen participating public-interest organizations. They may undertake a variety of activities, including research, writing, public education and advocacy on a range of security issues, including nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, non-proliferation, missile defense, weapons trade, environmental and energy security, and peacekeeping, that support the goals of their host organization, and may attend coalition meetings, policy briefings and Congressional hearings. Fellows are supervised by senior level staff and often have the opportunity to publish articles, blogs, or reports. The program also arranges meetings for the fellows with policy experts. Many former Scoville Fellows have gone on to pursue graduate degrees in international relations and taken prominent positions in the field of peace and security with public interest organizations, the Federal Government, academia and media.

The 6-9 month fellowship in Washington D.C. is open to recent undergraduate and graduate alumni with an excellent academic record and a strong interest in issues of peace and security. Deadline to apply is January 6th, 2017. For more information visit scoville.org.

Cultural Vistas Opportunities

Application season for the Cultural Vistas’ fellowship programs is now open. Several fully-funded programs for various students and professionals are available.

Sophomores and juniors who have not participated in a formal work or study abroad program, may want to consider the Cultural Vistas Fellowship. The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals is a great opportunity for students and recent graduates (18-24 years old) in all fields, who wish to live, study, and intern in Germany. The Alfa Fellowship Program to Russia and the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program are great for early- to mid-career professionals, who wish to gain high-level experience abroad.

The University of New Hampshire’s Sustainability Institute is inviting applications for their competitive, multi-disciplinary Sustainability Fellowships. The program pairs outstanding students with challenging, diverse projects that will propel the U.S. toward a sustainable, resilient future. ORISE Summer Fellowship Opportunity

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is offering summer research opportunities at the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) and at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The appointment period is full time and will run for 10 weeks starting May 23, 2016. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years of age with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Great Lakes Summer Fellows Program

The Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research (CILER) is now accepting applications for the 2016 Great Lakes Summer Fellows Program. Sponsored by NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab, the program provides motivated undergraduate juniors and seniors as well as graduate students with the opportunity to conduct research on imperative Great Lakes topics. This year there are eight positions available. Underrepresented students in the aquatic sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.
